I threw together a little video for you guys that are unsure of the Texas Rig building process.

Build list:
2.3mm double barrel crimp sleeves (2 per rig)
2/0 Coastlock Swivels
200-250# Mono (48" + 8" for each loop)
Wore crimpers
Coke can

The finished product

I prefer a loop on one end and the wt on the other. Sliding wts are a pain.

The other option is decoy slide, you like that better?

Cody your loop around the beer can and crimp off, that's way too simple, you need to over complicate it a little more, few more loops, then back over, then underneath, then crimp off.

What makes them a pain? Seems like a good design. I haven't done it myself though.

Having a swivel that attaches to the decoy with a loop at one end of the line, and a stationary weight at the other is the best way to do it. The decoy slides and not the weight. There is no more pulling the line out of the water and getting your hands wet finding the loop at the bottom.

All you do is lift the decoy a couple inches out of the water, and clip your carabiner through the loop that is at the top of the line by the decoy's keel. Drop the decoy back down on the water. Then, as you make your way to the next decoy, the decoy you just clipped on slowly slides down the line as it sits on the water. Much faster and you don't get your hands wet at all.

The sliding weight design is the original way of doing it, but like many things in life there is a better mouse trap available (stationary weight design in this case.)

Both the weight and swivel move on mine making it's makes for super quick/easy and dry pickups!

So what's the point of the weight moving then? What's the point of the second loop in the line slow the weight? Seems like it would still be better for the weight to be fixed at one end of the line.

Why would you ever want to pick it up from the end at the bottom of the lake? Having a loop at both ends and sliding weight seems completely unnecessary. Not trying to start anything, I just really don't see an advantage at all.

I understand what you are saying, I just think the logic is flawed.

The key is you have to have loops at both ends

For ease of assembly you make the weight and swivel slide down mono

Loops on ends keep swivel & weight on mono

It beats rolling decoy string under deeks

I had a store bought brand Tx rig and developed these from the fake I saw with a small loop at one end bc there are times the other identical loop comes in handy like when cleaning decoys or when you have them out on the yard separating into separate species or groups

I'm with TTU on this. SLiding weights are a pain in the [censored] and outdated.

I'm not sure why the key is to have a loop on each end but I'll cut you some slack since you've come a long way in 4 short years.

All you need is a wt. crimped to one end, a swivel on the line that can slide and a loop on the other end.

If you use your rigs for many years (more than 4) some of the lines end up not being perfectly straight any longer and will develop kinks. When this happens your sliding wt will begin to hang up and not slide all the way down and one day you will throw decoys out and they will drift away. That same old line will still slide through a swivel though.

I have used my rigs for 4-5 seasons and no kinks, works great from my point of view and everyone else I make them for.

The picture below (found on google) is an example of how I do it. I use a bank sinker instead of an egg weight, and the weight is fixed at the bottom, with no loop under it. This way, the weight is always in direct contact with the bottom, and it can't slide up and down the line and bounce against your decoys during travel. The loop at the bottom is unnecessary, and can get caught caught around debris under the water and pick up moss.

Cody - you should give this version a shot and see what you think. The way you do it is used by many, many duck hunters around the nation and it definitely works, but lots of guys are switching over to a fixed weight instead. I don't think anyone is saying that your way doesn't work, just that the fixed weight would be an improvement.

I melt my egg sinker straight onto coated wire cable. Weight is never coming off of the wire unless I remelt the lead.

I use coated cable as well. No kinks or line memory. Only way to go, IMO. cheers
