Here's the deal:
I have a 5 year old GSP (Jenny) who is a natural hunter and does well hunting with me. Covers ground, steady on point, steady to shot, finds and retrieves well. She is a outside dog with a big pen to roam in and was raised with 2 other family dogs. One of the other dogs passed on about a year ago and the other (13 year old lab) is very elderly and is not likely to make it another year.
I am considering getting another hunting pup (either GSP or Brittany) with the idea of hunting them together and Jenny will help bring her along. The problem is this: Jenny is extremely jealous - to the point I am even leery of putting a new pup in with her for fear of her treating it poorly or even hurting it.
I am currently thinking of getting the pup and keeping her in a separate smaller pen next to the big area Jenny is in - at least until the pup is old enough to hold her own against Jenny if she gets aggressive. I will of course do what is necessary as Alpha to protect the pup and establish boundaries for Jenny, but I work and simply cannot be there all the time to monitor them.
Is this the best approach? If not, what are other options?
Any thoughts/advice is appreciated.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

Tough question. There is no simple answer. Sometimes a pup will make an older dog like them. I would definitely keep them separated while I was away.

I'm no expert but have a jealous old lab that I had the same fears about. He always loved kids until mine were born and he has ignored them for 7 years. I knew he wasn't going to like it when I got my new pup. He tried ignoring and growling at her for a while but she kept jumping on him and wanting to play. Eventually he grabbed her by the head. At that point I grabbed him by the ears and worked him over good. He learned that was unacceptable and now tolerates her.

I have a new pup at my house, so I am going thru the same deal. Millie, my E. Cocker, is jealous little thing, but tolerates the puppy pretty well as long as I am around to referee. I wouldn't think of leaving the puppy in the same kennel with any of the grown dogs. I don't want any of them beating her down while trying to teach her lessons. That is my job. (lessons that is, not beat downs )

I have one jealous female, and she will normally come around to liking another dog, as long as they are submissive to her. Her and another alpha female is a no go.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Bring Jenny inside when the time comes and introduce her to the pup. You'll know immediately if there is going to be an issue. It's my bet that Jenny's instincts will kick in and she will raise the pup. If you can, take Jenny with you to visit the pup before bringing it home, they will get familiar real fast, making the trip home easier.
Izzie (85lbs rot/aussie shepard) has raised Sparkey (8 lbs of long hair Mutt) for two years. They're great together.
Good luck.
