Check out what Kahr has to offer. Good stuff, varying levels of features and expense. Don't know of any bad ones. I have the CW40, myself---two of 'em. Good carry guns.

All strikers not hammer. I'm having a hard time thinking of a small 9 with a hammer. Unless you go Makarov or something like that.

The Ruger LC9 is a hammer fired pistol, and the LC9s is striker fired.

X2 on the Kahr. Have a CW9 and a CW380. There is also a tiny 9 like the CW 380. Tiny little sucker.

That's the CW380. They have a 9 the same size. Very accurate and reliable for a small pistol.

Pictured next to the CW9 which is obviously larger.

Maybe look at PM9?

Boberg XR9S.....most innovative compact 9mm on the market, it is hammer fired and handles +P ammo. Quality is on par with Wilson Combat and other premium guns.

What's the point of specifying hammer-fired? You could go with a kel tec pf-9 or something, but the trigger pull on that is a joke compared to the striker-fired m&p shield.

My FIL just picked up the new version of the m&p shield and I was very, very impressed with it. Good handling, good trigger, good size. Most accurate carry pistol I've been able to shoot.

The two main ones I carry are either a XDs or G43. I really like both of them.

Just a guess, but maybe he specified it because that's what he wants? I carry AIWB, and won't carry anything without a hammer either. Striker fired is not always the answer.

Unless it's an external hammer, is there really a difference?

Did you read the rest of my post? Some hammer fired pistols have much worse triggers than anything with a striker. Is there another reason? If so, what is it? If not, why are you ignoring some really good options?

just because some hammer fired guns may have a heavier trigger does not make them "worse" than a striker fired trigger pull. There are still lots of people that like DA/SA type guns. There are also lots of people that prefer a SAO/hammer fired gun. I personally carry a couple of different H&K guns that are hammer fired. They don't have the best shortest cleanest trigger pulls in the world, but they meet several different criteria that I deem much more important than a 3# Shield trigger. I personally like to have an external hammer to use as an extra level of safety during reholstering, because I carry AIWB. The OP listed a hammer in the features he was looking for. I'm sure he had a reason for having that requirement.

back on subject..... OP, take a look at the H&K P30SK. G26 size comparable, awesome ergos, and a couple different trigger set-ups to choose from.

Might Break the bank but I just got a new Kimber Micro Carry CDP. This gun this is SO sweet. Shoots soft and accurate, VERY little recoil. Loves the 90 XTP and FMJ, I just got some Remington Defense ammo with the Golden saber clone. will test later.

I'm VERY happy with the tiny pistol. I have the Super Fly pocket holster and can carry it effortlessly in my short pocket.

Check it out, or don't, cuz you will want one
