I'm a little worried this year about my lab. She's getting close to ten years old and she doesn't take the heat as well as she used to. Last dove season I made sure she had plenty of cool water and i even had to make her take breaks and skip retrieves. I was wondering if anyone had a good review on a cooling vest? Would it be worth trying out?

Thanks

We take a baby pool and coolers full of water, NOT ICE WATER, and leave it next to the trucks in the shade. Everyone just stays alert to the dogs and will take regular breaks to get them into the water. I have had to trip their legs to get them to lay down in it before. My black lab will just go under water on her own. She will stick her whole head under without coaxing.

Take her in the morning and you will be fine. Dixie is 10 and will be out there.

Water and breaks. I've over heated a dog, not fun at all and worse for them I'm sure. Just watch her if she's really hot do like wal said and let her drink and get her in shade/water until she's ready again.

Keep an eye on her closely. You are going to have to make her stop to take breaks now and then, labs over heat easily compared to other breeds.

I actually bought the cool vest for military/law enforcement dogs a few weeks ago as a just in case. I have noticed a difference and my yellow lab does seem to have more energy for a longer amount of time. I have also noticed that when she wears it after activity her pant stops sooner with the vest than without the vest. How much is it helping... I really don't know but anecdotally it does seem to make a difference. I just wouldn't expect the vest to make up for poor judgement.

an old-ice chest full of water (not ice water) is what I take
when cooling my dogs I make sure their feet and under side gets wet first
the head and back it helps some
keep a good eye on them and have fun

I condition mine to the heat all year. My kennel sire is 12 and still gets after it. Like any other athlete, keep them in shape for the job they do and it will be easier on them overall.

Like already stated, hydration. Watch them close. Labs with a hard drive won't quit until you make them in my opinion.

Enjoy the hunt.

I think a "cooling vest" would be more detrimental than good. Just make sure they have shade and water and watch them.

Paxton will be 12 in November and she will still get out and hunt. In fact, she prefers land retrieves way more than cold water retrieves nowadays.

I quit taking my lab dove hunting years ago, just fetch the birds yourself, it's not like you have to swim to get them. Taking a dog dove hunting, especially in the heat, is not worth the trouble, it dictates where you can hunt, risk of dog getting over heated, getting bit by a rattle snake, if you go to eat after the hunt you can't leave them in the truck it is too hot, etc... Just not worth it, JMO.

I probably won't stop hunting because my dog didn't go but I'd rather have her with me than not. She'll sull up for days if I don't take her.
