I was just looking at the Sportmans Guide online and noticed they are selling guns now. They have a Hi Point 9mm semi auto for $155 (may be cheaper elsewhere, I just saw them there). At that price, I wouldn't be so worried about leaving in the truck, but dont want it if it's just a toy.. Any thoughts? I know nothing about them.

We have problems with them at the range pretty regularly, failing to feed properly, eject, etc. On the other hand, most people that buy hi-point pistols probably don't take care of them as well as they should.

For me, the reliability of a glock (for example) is more than worth the price. On the other hand, I don't leave a pistol in my car at all times, and a $150ish dollar pistol might be a gamble worth taking in that respect.

I own 2 Hi Points: a 45ACP pistol, and the carbine in 45ACP. They are not "pretty" firearms, but for all the years I've owned and shot mine, I've never had a failure to fire or eject, and I've put hundreds and hundreds of rounds through them. For close range work on feral hogs, as I reloader, I use either a 230 grain personal defense bullet loaded to the safe max, or 200 grain cast SWC, also loaded to the safe max. I own Kimbers and Colts and S&W's; all are fine firearms, but are a bit picky about what I feed them, and I've had FTF and FTE problems with all of them. The Hi Points just keep on running, regardless of what I have put through them. My pretty, fine pistols are in my main safe; the ugly Hi Point pistol is in the handgun safe by my bedside. One other thing about Hi Points: if it ever fails, the company will fix it for you, quickly, whether you're the original owner or not! No questions asked!! The life time warranty follows the firearm, not the owner. And, one last thing: all your gun snob buddies will heap ridicule on you when you show up with your Hi Point. Just smile and take their grief, and then step up to the line and outshoot them all!!

Here's a morning's work with the 45 carbine:

This was my experience owning one. I ended up selling and getting a Springfield.

I have a Hi-Point 9mm Pistol. I have put 1300 rounds through it and I have never had a failure to feed or any issues. The gun is accurate and has very clean sites. It is ugly as heck but it is a very good gun. It only holds 8 rounds but if you need more than 8 rounds you are in the wrong place.

I think of it as an AK, it has big parts and it is simple.

I got one in 380acp. fun little gun to shoot - surprisingly accurate too.
never any failures or feed issues; goes bang every time - hits the bull too!
was $139 on buds w/free shipping. lifetime guarantee. hard to beat that.
bought another magazine on ebay for $15. best $150 I ever spent.

Have a carbine in 9mm, never a single issue and very accurate at 50 yards with a red dot.

Thanks y'all. Sounds like a no brainer for me. I drive 120 miles a day just to and from work. And about 2 days a week, I am at different locations all over Dallas & Fort Worth looking at different construction projects (parking in downtown lots, parking garages, etc.) so I am always worried about losing a 4- 500 dollar pistol to a thief. I have never been broken into (knock on wood) but losing $150 sounds better than 400 to me.

One thing you could consider when leaving your piece in your truck is to use a cable lock arrangement. Run the cable through the trigger guard and then around one of the seat support struts. If the bad guy wants your pistol bad enough to take your seats out or cut the cable with a BIG cable cutter, he will have to be pretty desperate! And, when he finds out he's trying to remove a $150 pistol, he may move on to the next truck, as fencing one these ugly dudes won't bring him much money!

They may have improved, but around 15 years ago a buddy showed up at hunting camp with a new HiPoint 45 pistol. I was a little intrigued by the price, but not so much by the heavy weight. So we took it out and shot it. Can it shoot? Well, it went bang and spit out an empty shell. Was it accurate? Not at all. I think a lead ball out of a smooth bore might have been more accurate than that pistol. At 15 feet, it was hitting way off to the side. Like I said, they may have improved since then, but I wouldn't pay $150 for the pistol we were shooting.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

I had the 9mm carbine. Itwas very accurate and cycleed well. Withthat being said it was very cheaply made.

Toxarch, the Hi Points of 15 years ago were definitely not the same as the last 5 years of so of production. They're still homely and heavy, but they shoot very well!

The only one I have shot was pretty unreliable.

As a snake/ranch gun it might be OK. But I wouldn't trust it as a self defense gun.

I've had 3 of them, all were several years ago. One of the 9mm's never ever malfunctioned the other one did at times. Both shot well.

The 45acp was far and above the best, it never missed a beat with every kind of reload and factory ammo there is. Ran like a Singer sewing machine. Very big and heavy though if that's a factor. Hi-Points have to be big and heavy because they are direct blowback actions, not locked breech.

They have the best warranty in the gun business too.

I took a 40cal pistol on a trade, it shot well for the 2 mags I put through it to test function. They're easy to tear down and clean as well. They are ugly and heavy but seem to do well. When I took my CHL class, there was an elderly guy there with the .380 version. He never had a malfunction and passed the class with ease. I do have the 9mm carbine and it's a fun rifle to shoot. I picked it up on a whim, added a newer stock and rails (it looks like the beretta CX9 now), had the reciever cover cerakoted, and put the 4x shotgun scope back on it came with. It's cheap and fun to shoot.

parasite, that comment on the warranty is so true! Buddy of mine bought a "pawn shop beater" in 9mm, and before he even shot it, he sent it back to Hi Point. They totally reworked it, cleaned it, upgraded it, and returned it to him with an extra magazine, and didn't charge him a nickel! Unreal!!

Better than a sharp stick, when they work! I "worked" in a friends gun shop Part Time, a few years back, 70% of the ones he sold had to go back for "warranty" repairs. We found out they had firing pin issues, after that he quit selling them. The warranty was great, but it was a customer service nightmare!

As I mentioned, the earlier ones did have problems, but they've come a long way in just a few years in terms of out of box quality and customer service. It seems like they've learned quite a few things about building, selling, and providing customer support for their guns. I had early (8-10 years ago) 9mm pistol and carbines and they had a problem with the magazine not seating solidly in the well. After a trip back to the factory, the problems were fixed without charge, and they paid the postage back to me. Two of my sons now own those 9mm's and they have not had a bit of problem with them. My 45ACPs have run flawlessly from Day 1, so I'm still a fan of the Hi Point. They still won't win any beauty contests, but they shoot well and can become a deadly weapon with which to bludgeon someone if you run out of ammo! smile

I picked up a 9 mm carbine thinking it was a good what the heck truck gun. Well I was one of the snobs and I tell you what they are well made and they work great.

I had a 40 I bought for ~$90 used at a paen shop a while back, for the price it wasn't bad, but I personally wouldn't carry it for self defense.

only issues I had with a 9mm pistol, was using aluminum cased rounds. Every couple of rounds would stove pipe. Did not have the issue with brass or steel cased. It worked and was cheap. It you ran out of bullets, throw the gun at the target, It was heavy enough it would do significant damage, lol
