I think last time I did it I put up a 4'X4'sheet of white paper at 50 yards, put a dot in the center aim at it , fire and hope I hit paper, then go from there. Is that about it??
Or can you take the scoped upper and do the look through the bore at bull's-eye, then up through scope to see how far you're off and adjust from there??

If I was doing it I would start at 25 yd. or take the bolt carrier out.

Open the AR and remove the BCG and lay it sideways between the upper and lower. This will allow you to adjust the rifle and look through the barrel to see the target. Then carefully adjust the scope. Always look down the barrel and scope back and forth to ensure that the barrel is aimed at your target as you adjust. Then Shoot it at 25 yards and get it sighted in. When you move the target to 100 yards, you will be very near center and make your final adjustments for 100 yards zero if that is what you want.

The easiest way is as you did take a large paper target 4X4 is plenty big. Put it at 100 yards shoot one shot while manintaining rifle steady dial crosshair from the bullseye to the actual POI ... fire again you should be very close...then fine tune.
Should rarely take more than 3 rounds and works for all rifles.

Why would you not want to save ammo and bore sight the rifle first?

Take the upper off the lower and pull the bolt. Stabilize the upper on bipod and rear bag, or just sandbags. Look down the bore at a 100 yard target. Don't move the upper and look through the scope at the lowest magnifocation. Turn the turrets (knobs) until the scope is looking at the same point as the barrel. Reasseble the rifle, place a big piece of white paper at 100, and fire one round. Adjust POI as needed to get it where you want it, fire number two, adjust as needed, shot three should be money if the scope tracks properly. After all that you're done zeroing.

Why would you not want to save ammo and bore sight the rifle first? If you are referring to my method with an AR ....Thats fine if you want to waste time and then you still will take three shots to get it exact because chances of getting it dead on by bore sighting are slim and none. All bore sighting gains is going from a large piece of paper to a slightly smaller piece... no change in the amount of ammo used. I do bore sight bolt guns at home with a bore sighting tool but then when I get to the range I still use the same method so no time or ammo is wasted. Bore sighting tools or at least mine don't do so well for AR's due to scope height. It works for me but I do it a lot so time is important.
