7/08. You can buy reduced recoil ammo for it as well.

Pics of GF would greatly help us help you as well.

I went through this with my wife a few years ago. My rifle is just too big for her to handle, and she was terrified of the recoil. She did well with my 22-250 and took her first hog with it, but the it was a big challenge for her to get comfortable with the size of the rifle.

We started looking at different youth models and found that they where the perfect size for her. We also figured out that most of the manufacturers make really cheap youth rifles that felt more like a temporary rifle until the youth got big enough for a full sized rife. Selection was very limited in our area, so after awhile, we made a day of it and drove to the closest Cabala's in Allen TX. They had a huge selection and the one she liked the best was the Remington 700 youth model. We went with 7mm-08 because of the ballistics, bullet size of 140 grains and availability of ammo.

Once we dialed in the trigger, she quickly got comfortable with it and was shooting 2 inch groups at one hundred yards. We are working on different shooting positions and finding the best ammo for her rifle. Best I've done is an inch and a half with it. She has taken sever hogs now, plus several snakes. Even though she has her own .380 pistol, she prefers the rifle to it for killing things.

One of the biggest thrills for me was to come home and see her walking back from the deer blind by herself after shooting at targets she set up near the feeder. She likes to practice there since it's where we do most of our hunting.

7mm-08 that was my first rifle and when my grandma hunted in her late 60s that is what she had. Kick is not bad and it gets the job done.

Majority of the kids hunting on a place I'm involved with shoot 7/08 or 25-06 (SPS/XCR/MTN SS). A couple go the magnum w/ brake route. Similar set-up would work well for a small framed woman.

How serious about it do you think she is?

I bought my wife a 243 because she was interested in hunting and wanted to do more of it and she didn't like shooting my 270. After shooting the 243 a handful of times she didn't like it and would rather shoot the 270. She also isn't near as persistent about wanting to hunt as she once was.

Moral of the story, buy something your ok with sitting in the safe and never seing the lite of day again, or something you may enjoy using yourself.

Mine loves her .243. I'm assuming she already know how to shoot, but just in case I taught her the basics with a pellet gun, then a .22 then the .243. Started with the .243 and that was a mistake on my part, so did it all over with the stepped method.

Buy her a 300WM and set the eye relief on the scope about a half inch short have her shoot it once and you will never have to worry about ruining a perfectly good hunting trip. Your welcome.

7mm-08. Doesn't kick any more than some of the smaller calibers people like for gals and youth. The benefit is being able to hunt up to elk sized game as the shooter gets older and/or more confident.

You can easily get reduced-recoil ammo for your 270; try that first.
Other than that, a 7mm08 w/ youth-length pull is good idea.

No muzzle brake, either. I can't believe folks use muzzle brakes on non-magnum rifles. Too loud for what little reduction in recoil one gets. Heaven forbid you ever have a negligent discharge in an enclosed area with that brake and no hearing protection. Like inside a deer blind.

I have one rifle with a brake. It's a 300RUM and only weighs 7.5 lbs.

AR chambered in 6.5SPC. Similar ballistics to a 270, and with a collapsible buttstock it will fit her, or you, just fine. I bought one a few months ago for my now 11year old son, and he loves it. Found it on gunbroker for less than $900 including shipping.

243 is great, my wife is 5' and shoots it. Also, a 6.5 Grendel is a good, low recoil round and shoot the 140 grain pills.

Little reduction? Like cutting it in half.

So you're going to put together a rifle factoring in the possiblity of a negligent discharge? Well by that logic you should not have any rifle at all. What if the negligent discharge was pointing at your hunting partner's head?

Tikka T3 lite stainless in 243 or 260. Don't they offer a compact model? I think so. And then there's the Ruger American in the compact version. But...my guess is that if she sees the Browning Micro, she'll want it. It's prettier than the other two I mentioned.

Does a 5 foot tall person really need a youth gun? I shot full size guns from youth on as well as every kid I grew up shooting/hunting with. In my mind 5' is over the threshold of a youth stock, id find a low recoil cal and get full size. My 243 is just a standard short action and it feels too small if anything.

Let me make it a little easier for you. First off, the MAXIMUM recoil reduction you will ever get is 50%. Most are more like 30-35%. 50% is an "UP to" number.

As for negligent discharges. He77 no I'm not going to build a rifle with that in mind. However, are you naive enough to think that every rifle ever fired was an intentional discharge? Negligent (no such thing as accidental) discharges happen all the time. Even at your 800 yard steel plate competitions. If it happens in an enclosed area like a deer blind and you/or your hunter aren't already wearing hearing protection, you may never need it again cuz you're gonna be dammed near deaf! A muzzle brake on a non-magnum rifle is unnecessary IMO and I'll stick with my opinion. If your wife or kid needs less recoil, consider a heavier barrel, smaller caliber or lighter bullet for the caliber.

The ONLY reason for a muzzle brake is for bench rest boys like you who need to watch their bullet splash. You can do the same with a bull barrel on all but the heaviest calibers.

Negatives to a muzzle brake...

Cost
Barrel Length
Blowback (Noise)
Scope damage from the rapid deceleration caused by muzzle brakes

Finally, I would suggest that if you think negligent discharge is an impossibility for someone as experienced as you, you sir are the one who should not be in possession of ANY firearm.

That's just comical.

You think you know more than you know. I'm quite sure I can hit smaller and farther than you can from the
hood or roof of my pickup. So there went your benchrest theory. Don't make presumptions as to the type of shooting I do and teach beacuase you are way off course with the thought of benchrest.

There is a really good article Judd left a link to of a recent muzzle brake test. And many models rediced recoil 40% or better, and the ones I use, JEC were in the top. That was a pleasant surprise.

Cost, what good is a rifle that never gets shot because the owner is recoil shy?
Barrel lenght = one more inch, big whoop!
Noise, unbraked rifles are loud, requiring hearing protection. Only a suppressor negates that.
Scope damage, well I've got about 10,000 rounds experience behind braked rifles and have yet to have a scope damaged (four different scopes, from three manufacturers)

The last time I had a negligent discharge was when I was 12 years old with a shotgun pointed in the air, so that was 23 years ago. Bolt action rifles are probably the safest there are. Don't close the bolt handle until the sights are on target. Thus I don't ever use my safety because I don't trust any of them.

So get out from behind the computer and go watch guys that shoot on a weekly basis. There are plenty that have brakes on .223 and up.

You're right fireman. You know me and all about me. And you're obviously a far superior marksman because you say so. I make no assumptions about the type of shooting you teach or practice. All I said about benchrest is that's the only situation where a muzzlebrake is genuinely useful. I prefer a suppressor for recoil and noise reduction.

As for getting out from behind a computer and watching guys shoot every week, no thanks. Especially if they're ignorant enough to believe a negligent discharge can't or won't happen to them or one of their "students". That's the type of ego that gets folks killed.

I shoot about 3,000 rounds/year out of each of my hunting rifles. Throughout the year. In multiple shooting positions and stances. That equates to around 20,000 rounds per year and I typically hit what I shoot at. Exactly where I intend to hit it. And it's not always a piece of steel that isn't moving.

I know more than you think I know roflmao
