For whitetail. My Remington 700 BDL in .270 is a bit much for her. She can shoot off the sand bags but struggles in the field. At 5' maybe it's just too much gun for her. I'm thinking 25.06 or .243.....maybe in a youth rifle. Any first hand recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks

Either is a fine choice but I would shy away from youth models but that just my opinion. My wife is vertically challenged and I bought 3 diff youth models before I found a 700 bdl in 243

243 or 7mm-08. My other half doesn't like the kick of her 270 and likes the 7mm-08 my grandpa has. Although she will be getting a limbsaver soon.

I bought mine a Browning Micro Midas Xbolt in 7/08. It was perfect for her. She's 4'10". It fits her perfect. Doesn't recoil much at all. And it is quite effective on deer. It also came with spacers to lengthen the pull.

Another vote for the micro Midas

1. I think the fit is more critical than whether it's a .243 or a .270, etc

2. Get a good recoil pad.

3. I'd consider the .270 using a reduced recoil load to start.. reason being if she does grow into the gun you can get regular .270 ammo and she can hunt more types of game.

Consider yourself lucky she want to hunt.....good luck.

I'd get a full size rifle in the caliber useful with what she will be shooting and just get a muzzle break and good recoil pad. Mine shoots a 7mm with ease and I think she's 5' 2".

At 5' tall a full side gun is not gonna fit her , no two ways about it

Could probably get by from the bench but that's about it

7/08 or anything with a good break on it. If you reload there are more bullet options for the 7mm. My wife liked my 257 roberts so I have yet to give her the option.

I'll throw a different option out there. AR-10 with adjustable stock. Excellent deer round. Very little kick. And makes a great pig gun you can abscond with when she's not using it. up

.243, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08. The 7 is going to recoil the most.

6.5 Creedmoor is not a hard recoiling round and provides a little more oomph on target than the 6mm (.243)

EAR PROTECTION IS CRUCIAL WITH ANY NEW SHOOTER, ESPECIALLY WOMEN. Get a rifle that fits her and has a good recoil pad. There are good muzzle brakes that reduce recoil 45%. Being loud is a lost argument, back to the hearing protection. And they are louder for bystanders than they are the shooter.

My sister shoots my .300UM with a muzzle brake and loves it, won't hardly shoot another gun. It is a full size gun and she typically shoots from a stand. She is 5' 2" and wouldn't be able to handle it without a solid rest.

My niece shoots a .257 Roberts and it is a good gun that she can grow with. IMO, a good option along with some of the others mentioned.

If you know someone that has a youth model, see if you can let her borrow it before you buy it. I have shot a few and didn't like the feel.

Short action 7-08 or 6.5 creedmoor

My wife is deadly with a creedmoor.

She has no issue with my 25-06 but she prefers a shorter rifle thus why she really likes the creedmoor.

My wife shot my TC Encore in 7-08 well. They make a shorter stock if needed, but the regular stock worked for her. It is fairly light and short, even with a 24" barrel.

Lots of great options mentioned and I agree with most. A couple other things to think about as this will be her gun

Mount the scope to fit her eye relief and perhaps choose one with plenty of eye relief, do not want her to get a scope ding.

If she is recoil sensitive a break is not a bad idea but a good recoil pad goes a long way for reducing felt recoil and proper fit goes even further.

If an AR would be ok with her look at them in 6.5 Grendel or 6.8SPC. Plenty of thump for Texas hogs and deer with very little recoil and adjustable stock.

Savage Axis, youth model.7mm-08. My wife is 5' 110 lbs and shoots this great. Get the Hornady Lite (reduced recoil)ammo and don't look back.
