This is the question for the day. I have a 1975 model Remington 700 BDL in 30-06 that I am currently working up loads for. I will be the first to admit that I am a bad shot. With that being said I think a lighter trigger will help me improve.

Should I install an aftermarket trigger and if so what would you recommend?

Also how light is to light for a hunting trigger?

Also currently you must move the safety into the fire position to open the bolt. Will a new trigger change this?

If your shooting bad and the trigger pull is too heavy, you might need a trigger or that one adjusted. Have you had that one pulled on a scale? Some like their triggers set at 2-3 lbs.

Most feel that 3 lbs is about right for a big game rifle and that lower settings belong on target/varmint guns. That said, I have some triggers that are lighter, one in particular is very, very light. Anything below 3 lbs requires that you really pay attention to your technique. I know that some will say that you should **always** be paying attention to your shooting technique, fire discipline, etc., but the truth is that it's easy to get excited during a hunt. After all, that is why we go hunting. A 3 lb trigger is a reasonable setting for a big game rifle, at least until you develop a strong personal preference.

Timney (not a Calvin Elite)

I like 2 pounds, but 3 may be a better fit for you. The good is, that the Timney is adjustable, so set it where you like it.

My favorite trigger so far is (I hate to say it) the Savage Accu-trigger, set at two pounds. The trigger is light, but the center blade lets you know when to expect to feel it, so premature ignition is a lot less likely to happen.

Before that, my favorite trigger was NEGC double-set triggers I installed in a 98 Mauser. Every now and then though, that hair trigger in the front would go off before I really intended for it to, especially in cold weather. You never set or go near the front trigger on those of course until the gun is pointed in the general direction, but still, I'm very particular about the gun not firing until I intend for it to. - So I wound up liking the Savage Accu-trigger better. It's very positive and controllable, even when its set very light.

Single-set triggers like the CZ has - have the same drawbacks as the double-set trigger.

Somebody ought to make a blade-type trigger for Winchesters, Remingtons, Brownings and Howas. - Having that extra bit of feeling the blade provides goes a long way toward good trigger control. The extra safety they provide is not so bad, either.

My favorite pull weight is between 2 and 3 pounds. Anywhere in there will do.

A good trigger is only one piece of the puzzle. You say you are not a good shot, but there are a set of "you" factors and there are a set of "gun" factors. Simply installing a lighter trigger will not improve your shooting. Your ability to steady the rifle, squeeze the trigger, and prevent jerking or moving the weapon in response to the anticipated firing is extremely important. On the rifle, it has to do with quality glass, floated barrel, quality smooth and possibly lighter trigger and good ammo. If you have a friend that you consider a great shooter or can get some rifle time with an instructor, you may be able to correct the issue(s) that are affecting your point of impact. For some of the shooters I work with, the trigger is the least of their problem.

I have a Timney in my Remington 700. Adjusted to 3 lbs, it has help me improve my accuracy. Lighter isn't the complete picture on Trigger improvement. Travel and break are important factors as well. Go with a Timney and don't look back.

Timney at 2 lbs is my favorite trigger on the market.

I have pulled a Timney, Jewel, and Rifle Basix as well as several stock triggers.

The factory trigger is a very good one and can be adjusted down to 2-3 pounds. I paid a gunsmith to do mine and it cost quite a bit less than a Timney. I do like Timneys though.
