I showed a picture of a railroad spike knife to an old fellow who shoes horses around Central Texas "I ain't a farrier, I'm horse shoer." I asked him if he could make something like it, and he said, "Shore; but I ain't a knife maker." I told him to go ahead and give it his best shot, and here's what he came up with. Looks exactly like the picture! Very, very sharp edge to it, and it's heavy enough to be a real weapon just wrapped up in your fist! It's a little sway backed, but it feels good in your hand. I may do a paracord wrap on the handle just to smooth out the sharp edges a bit.

I think we all know that railroad spikes don't make good knives due to the low carbon content however many people will make knives out of them and some look pretty nice.

Several ago my son brought me a railroad spike (it had a significant story)and asked me if I would make a knife for his daughter when she turned 12. The darn spike went from drawer to drawer and almost forgot about it over the years then one day I ran across it and remembered my granddaughters birthday was coming up so it was time to do some forging. I didn't want to do the conventional railroad spike knife for her, I wanted it to be girly. This is what I came up with along with a pink sheath.

Very nice, Jank! Not quite as elegant or cleanly finished as mine, but a very nice piece of workmanship for a great cause! smile

As promised, I went ahead and did a paracord wrap on the Spike Knife. It didn't make it any prettier, but it sure makes it a more comfortable hand full!
