hi guys.
Cabelas has the S&B primers available for a a very nice $19.99 price and I picked up a few boxes to replace my vanishing CCI inventory.

Has anyone had good luck with these (small primers)

I found it interesting to note that they are listed for "rifle, pistol, and revolver" cases. Setting aside "revolver" as obvious marketing verbiage I wonder if they indeed are suitable for both pistol and rifle? Seems they would need to be pretty hot to serve both pistol and rifle, no??

I am a bit skeptical of standard vs "magnum" pistol primer branding but I would expect rifle primers to be hotter.

Any thoughts ?

Todd

Just curious, why would you save $.01 (a penny) per shot to buy the cheaper foreign made, lower quality primers for shooting. I know 2 types of shooters who get the foreign made primers- those who think it's not a bad idea to try them, and those who think it was the worst idea to to try them.

Well I wouldn't knowingly buy crap. They were represented by the Cabelas gun clerk as being very well reviewed. I find S&B ammo to perform quite well and simply because ammunition or components are "foreign made" is no indication of inferiority quality. I have quite a few Czech firearms from CZ to Springfield Armory (oops. Croatian, but it starts with a C smile.

And I seem to recall gunpowder itself is a foreign Chinese invention so maybe those foreigners know a thing or two about explosives. wink

So saving 33% on 1000 primers can add up. So, if they work fine, why would anyone pay extra for their primers?

Anyone have firsthand experience ? If not I'll
Let you know when I load my rounds.
Todd

They are pretty well reviewed by people who have actual experience using them. Best SD/ES in the lot!

Todd, go to accurateshooter.com and use the search function. Join...they have a forum as well. You will find a lot more reloading knowledge on that site readily available as it is obviously a reloading dedicated site.

Good luck

Jbd,

"Double" thanks! Interesting article. I'm even more confident that these primers will be just fine - especially for my less than demanding use of plinking pistol rounds. I'll sign up over at accurateshooter.com - thanks for the tip. I always enjoy learning from more experienced folks.

No problem. Guess I didn't realize you were shooting pistol as the site is geared toward rifle but still good info there

Cabelas was running a sale on them several months ago for $17.99 per 1k. I picked up 5k and have shot about 1k out of an AR with good results. Loaded several with Hornady softpoints using S&B as well as CCI and there was no difference in accuracy. Shoot 'em!

Thanks Ron. That's interesting to see that they do indeed function as small rifle as well as small pistol primers.

For grins I may chrono various 357 magnum loads to see if I can notice any meaningful differences in velocity es/sd using my remaining pistol powders and Winchester and CCI primers.

Jbd - I've dabbled in (semi!) precision rifle hand loads so the accurate shooter info is relevant.

So, again, why would you support a CZ company over American products for $.01.

The ES/SD is controlled a lot by the sweet spot of the rifle and the powder charge it likes. I can take any primer and put a powder charge that the rifle doesn't like and run the ES/SD numbers up. I can take any other primer and put it in combination with a powder charge that the rifle likes, and make that primer look good with a low ES/SD. Sure, the primer is an important roll in ammo. But that study is full of [censored]. The primer ignites the powder charge, and the powder charge controls the ES/SD more than the primer does. That link is worthless and does nothing to actually test the "reliability" of primers.

I have the same primer in multiple loads I test. Some loads are in the single digits of ES, and some loads are in the 40+ ES. So, is that the primers fault? Ridiculous link and worthless test, IMO.

Same reason a guy would buy a Glock, CZ or Bersa I guess, decent quality for a cheaper price. Having said that I own CZ and S&W pistols, but mostly Remington rifles. I have plenty of primers to last me for years (CCI, Winchester mostly), I buy them up when they're on sale.

It's not a worthless test at all if you understand what is being presented...but hey you're the expert

I will throw in my .02 cents even though it's probably not worth that much.
I too bought some back when they were 17.99 both small pistol and small rifle.
No issues with small rifle but I have had failure to fire with two Glock 9mm with the small pistol primers.
I think they are a little on the harder cup side and they fired on the second try.
I had 3 out of the first 100 I used.
I would not buy again for a pistol. Since it was plinking ammo not that big of deal

Not that this thread really turned out to be so useful, but I did want to clarify for those who read it, that the S&B primers are not "universal" pistol/rifle as the marketing verbiage on the box might seem to imply.

You have to look pretty carefully, but they are labelled 4,4 SP or 4,4 SR for small pistol and small rifle. respectively. Be careful when grabbing a box off the shelf.
