BE CAREFUL when handling firearms and don't ever let your guard down! Copied from NTRP Facebook page:
Marc Soulie of Spartan Rifles got shot yesterday on his vacation trip by a negligent discharge. I'm sharing his story with his permission as a lesson on safe firearms handling:
"Yes the rumor is true. I got shot Thursday morning due to someone else having a negligent discharge on a boat 8 miles from shore near Yakutat, AK. The short story is I'm ok, I'll be fine and flying bullets REALLY HURT. Here is the longer version: It's common in Alaska to shoot the larger halibut in the head at the side of the boat. My friend and customer, Wes, had just finished shooting one and I resumed fishing on the opposite side of the boat. The fish was harpooned, secured and dead. The boat was pitching back and forth in the choppy seas and Wes was focused on getting the fish in the boat instead of securing the Ruger 10/22 semi auto rifle in his hands. He cleared it by FIRST racking the slide and THEN removing the magazine. Obviously chambering a fresh round from the mag in the process. Now thinking he had a cleared and safe firearm he pushed it into the soft cordura scabbard. With With his finger on the trigger. While it was pointed at me. The high velocity hollow point bullet hit me in the back of my thigh with enough force to ricochet off of my femur and travel outward towards the front of my thigh where it stopped short of exiting. I screamed out that I'd been shot and dropped my rain gear and jeans to find a steady stream of blood the thickness of a pencil pouring out. I grabbed the first cord I could find and wrapped it around the top of my thigh and sat down. The other crewman, Mike, sat next to me and grabbed the rope to help with tight pressure. It was a worn and frayed 3/4 inch halibut stringer that felt like 60 grit sandpaper. Then Wes cut the anchor line, the fishing lines that were still out and started calling mayday on the radio while slowly motoring towards port. We had the bleeding under control but the tourniquet was painful. After giving the coast guard the quick info they asked for we had the bleeding slowed to a trickle and Wes buried the throttle. Then the bouncing, pounding boat ride somehow got it bleeding again so we stopped the boat and pulled the tourniquet really, really tight. That [censored] hurt. I yelled at Wes to get back on the throttle because we had to get to port regardless. This is when I started going into shock. I felt dizzy and weak. All I wanted to do was go to sleep but I fought it as hard as I could. I remember Mike slapping me in the face telling me to stay with him. I felt very calm and relaxed but I knew I was in shock and forced myself to push through it. I told Mike my blood type and that I was allergic to penicillin. Then I looked across the water to see the stunning view of Mt. St. Elias. The clouds parted and the sun was brightly shining out of a crystal clear blue sky. I looked at Mike and told him it was a beautiful day to got shot in Alaska smile emoticon We busted up in nervous laughter and started cracking jokes and enjoying the beautiful boat ride on a blood covered deck. By the time we got back to port the whole town was out at the dock waiting to see the [censored] from CA who got shot. My jeans and waders were laying in coagulated pools of gelatinous blood that were all over that rear corner of the boat. Then I was in the little medical care office in Yakutat and one of the police officers suddenly snapped his fingers and pointed at me "Are you, you, the Marc Soulie from Spartan rifles?" I said yessir I am. He smiled and said he knew me from Sniper's Hide and we had communicated through PM's in the past. Small world. Great guy too. He is a Marine combat vet and told me about the bullet and fragments he carries in his arm. He was the first one in the boat to get me and was key in controlling the chaos of getting me into the carrier and up onto the dock. I was airlifted to the hospital in Juneau where I am now. My thigh is a swollen bloodshot pulp of damaged muscle tissue from the hydrostatic shock. It's painful but I'm told it will heal. They decided to leave the bullet in there. I now have the best fishing story ever!"

Worst. Fishing. Trip. Ever.
There's no doubt that, at times, we can become too comfortable with firearms and heavy equipment.

Idiots are everywhere. They walk amongst us.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

holy carp
slow down, take notice and pay attention as to what is going on around you
glad it ended as it did
hoping the best for him
a little close for comfort
Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting.......holy kaka.....What a Ride!

Geez, just when you think that drowning is the most dangerous part of fishing. Glad he's ok and able to write that for everybody to read and learn from. His quick work with the tourniquet saved his life. Glad to see this had a happy ending, at least as happy as getting shot can be

I truly feel sorry for you, I too was hit but an accidental discharge. It did put a sour note to the end of the day. Hope your next fishing trip is spectacular without the drama. Get well soon, God bless.

Dang chad, hope mark is doing better. I just wanted to highlight the red part as I am glad that he said it was a nd, way to many times people call things like this a accidental discharge. Prayers up for a fast recovery. Walter
