I saw this on a forum where hunters are getting upset because TPWD are killing the deer.

They claim there is a non lethal testing method.

I don't enough about this subject to dispute it. Any opinions?

Thanks,
CM

The only folks happy about this are a few folks who would love to see deer breeders put out of business. And some dude named flounder. Can't test live deer in the wild, but they should damned sure be testing penned deer they can get to rather than destroying them. And they should be using live deer from the index herd to try and learn something, instead of destroying them.

I don't know the true numbers as there are rumors running rampant on this. I've heard anywhere from 100 to 500 animals have already been destroyed. I confirmed with TAHC today that the lab at A&M that is doing the testing on brain stems is about three weeks behind right now. That's for specimens epidemiologically linked to a CWD positive herd, only. As far as I know, there have been only four CWD positive results from destroyed whitetails tested thus far. All four originated from the index herd. I've not heard of one positive test on any other trace forward deer.

Part of the reason for the urgency in testing is so breeders who are CWD free can resume moving their deer for liberation or sale. In that regard, many have chosen to kill trace forward animals so they can get released from the TAHC/TPWD hold ASAP, rather than fight the system.

Lots of $$$ at stake here. Lots of unhappy breeders, hunters and ranch managers. Rightfully so, imo.

There is no approved live test, the rub is that the existing live tests haven't been validated, to validate the test, they need to allow researchers to do the live test prior to euthanizing the deer for the postmortem test. To date, there hasn't been sufficient access for the researchers, it's kind of a 'Catch 22'.

Bullcarp. There were 35 deer darted (tranquilized) at the index ranch. They were then killed with an injection. Biologists could have performed the live test for validation on every one of those animals before euthanasia. Did they?

Why wouldn't they then? I am sure there is a reason.

I know of exatly one instance where researchers got full access prior to herd depopulation. The agencies doing the depopulation have not been exactly welcoming to researchers. The TAHC seems to be more open and reasonable we'll see how much access researchers get.

They just killed the index herd. That's it. They are no more interested in learning about CWD than tpwd is. And no chunky monkey, there is no logical explanation. State agencies want to destroy any business that infringes on their percieved domain.
