Anyone else feed raw food diet to your dogs? The 2 dogs I have now are both on it, and seem to be doing really well. Just wondering if anyone else is doing it and what all they feed.

I would be interested to see the cost difference break down between raw vs. bagged food. Thoughts?

10 LB bag of chicken quarters= 5.99 lasts 3 days for 2 dogs 1 jar Peanut butter =2.49 lasts a week or more table scraps and extras = ?
About $60/ month or so. But keep in mind one dog is 170+ pounds, the other is 65 LB lab mix rescue. Both dogs are exceptionally healthy, and they poop once a day each and it extremely small, doesn't smell bad, and dries up and blows away in about 3-4 days.
Also consider the health benefit, that's the only reason I did it. They both have zero health issues, and are very active dogs. The big one had a weird musty smell for a little while, plain yogurt cured that in 3 days. They do get some occasional extra stuff, like deer entrails/trimmings, table scraps, if there is some meat on sale that is about to go bad, I will buy it for them to get a variety.
There are occasional additional costs as well like tuna fish, raw eggs. Very healthy dogs that are inside dogs mostly and only get bathed every month or 2. I highly recommend it, but it is a little additional work with preparation and all.
Oh and they eat the entire chicken quarters bones and all.

Only trouble is remembering to defrost the chicken the day before you run out. I could go buy a bag of the very expensive dog food, but even it has been "cooked" and all the natural enzymes are out of it.
Regular dog food is mostly filler, that's why dogs poop so much. Corn or other grains are not in a canines natural diet. You should check into it Bill, not really a big hassle, dogs sure seem to prefer it. Sure seems to keep dogs healthier.

you can buy dog food without corn and alot of grains and fiber and that only crap 1-2 times a day. that sounds like a healthy digestive tract. yes foods like ol roy and they may crap 4-6 times which isnt good.

I don't think so, dogs are canines same as wolves and coyotes. When is the last time you ever heard of a dog asking for a salad or tofu? Vegetables are not in there natural diet.

Bill is right... dogs DO need fiber and it serves an important role in digestion and general health. Wolves and coyotes don't necessarily get or need the same amounts of fiber as domesticated dogs do, but they get it none-the-less. There are different types of fiber, soluble, insoluble, etc. When a coyote eats a rabbit, it usually eats it all. The tendons, ligaments, fur, and contents of the rabbit's stomach are all considered usable sources animal fiber. Also usually dogs eat grass (fiber) because they aren't getting enough in their diet.

I've had several dogs that liked raw veggies. I've heard of dogs eating maters right off the vine.
If you're feeding PB, you're feeding them fiber, from a legume.

I think it's a crock. Purina has the largest research center in the world. I'll stick with Purina.

I've seen many instances (evidence) of various animals that have been killed and eaten by coyotes over the years and I have yet to ever find a stomach laying around.

I know that when I feed my dogs raw they crap once, maybe twice a day, their crap turns white in about a day and is gone in 3-4 days, dust in the wind I guess. Also, their coats look better, they gain weight(muscle not fat) quicker, and seem to work harder/longer. I cant afford to feed them raw year round, but I always try to when possible. Mine are partial to venison and calf liver, but the calf liver part might be because that's what I started blood track training with.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but plenty of coyote studies out their prove they eat a ton of plant material. Grass, mesquite, prickly pear, and many other fruits and veggies make up a large part of their diet.
I am a fan of raw, but don't feed it any more for various reasons. However, I do recommend adding more than just meat.

I have shot a coyote eating from a pile of corn I had put on a sendero. This year, some canine (suspect coyotes) were eating corn out of my BIL's garden patch.....a lot of it.

Grandpa had a setter that would go down to the garden and pick himself a bellpepper and bring it back up to the porch and eat it. We thought it was funny to watch him do it, seen him do it three different times, then Grandma caught him on the porch with one and she made us keep him out of the garden from then on. I've seen dogs eat stuff I wouldn't think of eatin, so to each his own, probably not bad either way just too expensive for the number of dogs we run now.

I had a Cairn terroir named Whisky that would eat bell peppers from the garden.
