I just recently got on a lease in Stonewall county just north of Rotan on the double mountain fork of the Brazos river. I'm just curious how the hunting is in the area. any mule deer that far south of the county?

There are some Mulies depending on the type of terrain you have. They are more spotty in the southern part of the county. The hunting in the area is very good if managed correctly. The deer don't run to the corn like hill country deer but they will come to the feeders when things dry up.

welcome to the forum Jakepow.

Thank you Pitchfork Predator! The terrain is pretty rough in a few areas. We do have 2 stock tanks and some deep draws with some really thick areas down by the river. Wheat fields to our north which I've heard if you have wheat fields you will have the deer. havent talked to many people that hunt out there but everything I've read online are from people hunting on the northern to central side of the county and not the southern where I'm at. Just curious on if the hunting was as good with whitetail, mulies, turkey, ect on the south side.

Keep me updated Driverdown on if they start hitting corn. We haven't gotten down there to start throwing corn yet but are trying to either this weekend or next!

Mule deer are along the double mountain fork, especially up along the rougher cedar brakes. Some real nice WT are taken every year in Stonewall. Good luck.

I've some good family friends that have a ranch by 610 kinda between aspermont and rotan and kill some really good deer every year. I do know that the deer don't usually run to feeders like other parts of the state. There are tons of pigs in your area but I don't think my friends have taken a mule deer off they're place since the early 2000s.

We're not far from 610 7m STW. Is there a pretty good deer population in the area? What about Turkey?

I don't think they have any turkeys to speak of. They have a decent deer population but that area isn't know for having large numbers. I wouldn't be surprised if you guys have some good genetics to start with at least.

I hunt about 20 north of you. I haven't seen any mule deer. Some one posted a giant Mule deer in a wheat field in your general area.

I haven't shot a turkey yet, only see them while driving to lease, or when the season is over.

Good whitetail population, and I agree, you will have deer at your feeder, but they won't hit hard till late in the season.

Should be a good year. The deer didn't really struggle till February for maybe a month tons of stuff to eat.

My only concern is lots of mature bucks have been shot during the drought.

I hunt in Stonewall between Aspermont and Rotan close to the river. We've been on the lease for 4 years and have never seen a Mule deer. We have decent bucks and the number of deep has improved greatly this year. We're covered up with pigs, turkey and quail. Duck and dove hunting are very good to great. I'm happy with the overall quality of the area.

Ive seen Mule deer just north of the river the last few seasons. Corn keeps the deer in the area and can produce late season but a pair of rattling horns will bring them in now.

I had a lease back in 09 or do south of the river just east of Rotan. I saw a couple of MD on one occasion in the cotton fields just south of my lease. Lots of hogs but the WT deer pop was just ok back then. Was on place for two years and only killed one spike. Could have taken some smaller 8 pt type deer but elected to let them walk. I let one walk and I was watching it go on the neighbors property the guy next door shot it. Oh well.

I hunt 8-10 miles north of the river on the Kent/Stonewall county line due west of the double mountains. There has only ever been 1 mulie doe spotted on our place. I have seen them feeding along 70 driving between Rotan and CR438 but for the most part I think they stay west of 70. Whitetail are generally pretty good although this year there aren't that many mature bucks due to the drought years. Plenty of hogs, turkey, and quail. Dove can be hit or miss. Last year was really good and this year was terrible.
