Does anyone have any experience with these? I currently have 10 mintue retriever and trouble shooting, SB, and fowl dog 1 on the way. It's just that everything Ive read is the hillmann way is something special and it's made easy for the 1st time trainer.

The Hillmann puppy video is great and I cant recommend it enough. Very easy to follow, step by step process. If you follow it closely, your puppy will be more than ready for more "formal" training. I like the Fowl Dawgs videos and used them as well, but the Hillmann videos are MUCH more detailed and easier to follow for a first time trainer.

Thanks UT, what would you recommend getting after the puppy video?

I followed the Hillmann puppy video and then sent my pup to a pro for 4 months when she turned 6 months old. I picked up where the pro left off with Fowl Dawgs when my pup came home. I like Fowl Dawgs, but think that Smartworks and TRT are more detailed. Fowl Dawgs definitely does not go into enough detail around force fetch for a first time trainer and that is probably the most important step in building a good retriever. There is an endless amount of information using the search function on RTF.

The puppy video is essentially everything leading up to formal "basics". Sit, here, intro to steadiness, hold, light collar conditioning, etc. It teaches you to teach the pup to be "wild to retrieve" while maintaining balance. Lots of good info about the video online.

That's a good description. It's a great primer regardless of whether you keep a pup with Hillman or move to something else. I'm personally on Hillman Fundamentals - Land and really liking it.

I used Hillmann training a retriever puppy, and both my dog and I love it. I switched to TRT, because that's what my support folks use.
I have watched a few of his online videos, and I'm fascinated with his training methods and they are a lot easier for folks who train alone.
I've always thought that a pup that completes Hillmanns puppy video would be better than 80% of the hunting dogs out there.
