I would like to buy an AR but I'm having trouble picking a make/model. I'm not a huge gun enthusiast but I would like one to shoot for fun on occasion. Problem I'm having is the research and literature online for these things is frankly overwhelming.

Does anyone have any suggestions for make, etc that I can narrow down my research? All I'm looking for is something cost effective to shoot, probably 223, something reliable, and made in USA is a plus. The best I've found so far is a colt but they seem considerably higher than others. If colts are worth the extra money I'll do it. Basically narrowing down my research would help tremendously.

Colt is not the best

I'm thinking just a good simple red dot scope. As for money, less than 1000-1500...it's one of those things, if 600 is mediocre but 1400 is awesome, I'll do 1400....but if 600 is adequate for a newb like me that's fine too.

Go to slickguns and find a deal you like. Any one of the big makers will run fine.

Not much difference in the $600 and $1400 guns for someone new to ARs IMHO. I just saw a windham at wal mart for $650 on clearance. Might be hard to beat that. Looked like a 16" or 18" standard profile barrel flat top with standard adjustable stock.

DPMS Panther at the gunshow this past weekend was $499.95 BNIB. S & W M & P's were mid 5's. Lot's of options. Take your time, and no matter which one you choose, I'd opt for the .556.

Those are both good options too. One piece of advice in this price range: I would avoid the lite profile barrel.

Whatever you do, do not purchase a fixed carry handle.

There's a good M&P Sport with 10 30 round magazines for $600, they are good guns for a newb

Hard to mount optics on it. No benefit to the handle. Flat top is much more versatile.

I would never buy an AR with a fixed carry handle personally.

Only fixed handle I would consider buying is a real M16. But those are so expensive now that the price would talk me out of buying it.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

DPMS Oracle at Buds for $500. Put a good trigger and decent scope on it and you're around $800.
