I listed my 6.8 AR for sale, that I sunk my soul & wallet into, w/the thinking of I'd get a Socom 16. I like the platform & Springfield. I'd mostly be shooting pigs on the run & deer. The 6.8 packed a punch & served us well on a few pigs & 3 deer we shot w/it but it hasn't been out of the safe in awhile & I've got a new itch. Anybody who has 1 regret their purchase of it? Will I regret getting rid of the 6.8 for a Socom 16? Thanks.

I'm biased but I'd never regret going with 7.62x51 over 6.8. There are no better 7.62x51 mags in the world than USGI M14 mags and you can get .308/7.62x51 ammo in more places and cheaper than 6.8. Ever see surplus 6.8 battlepacks or ZQ1 ammo at Walmart in 6.8? No, I don't think so.

I just recently traded for a Socom 16 for my son but we haven't had a chance to take it out yet. His SOCOM 16 is from the first year of production of them and has a Winchester oprod which they put the SOCOM 16 labeling on and a Winchester Trigger Housing. The rest is SA except for a USGI fiberglass stock, handguard and sights. Someone put a little work into it - put a National Match front sight, Vortex flash hider, SEI gas system parts, removed the scout rail and put on a USGI fiberglass handguard, and a USGI rear sight. It's shorter and handier than my full size M1A. Would look really nice in a modular chasis.

The SOCOM 16 is a great looking gun, but why go with that over an AR-10? Seems the AR-10 would be MUCH more modular, giving you a bunch of great options for optics, accessories, etc. Not to mention the controls are probably going to be more ergonomic than a M14 platform.

I'm kind of over all the 'options'. I have a pretty nice Remmy .308 long range rig that I can dump plenty of money in if I get that itch again.

If you are doing a lot of stalk type hunting I'd stay with the 6.8 that you have. The SOCOM or AR-10 along with the ammo is going to be heavier. If not moving much or weight doesn't matter I'd say get what you want. 308 ammo is easier to find and the 308 will have more range and knock down. All my pig hunting is within 150 yards and the 6.8 works great. I stalk a lot and get in/out of the truck a bunch so I like the smaller lighter package.

I'd say if the 6.8 is working keep it and save penny's to get the SOCOM 16 as well

The 6.8 is the #1 choice for hunting deer and hogs in an AR15

About 90% of hunting hogs is from a truck/Jeep. All deer hunting done from a blind.

Sounds like either one will do what you are needing it for. If it were me I'd keep the 6.8 and get the SOCOM. grin
