The exact reason I went to a timed feeder Amigo...
Mine are like a Bird Dog, you sling it they will eat it..I built that timed to cut the Obama Plan down No real reason to feed protein if not free choice. Well maybe one if its mainly to keep them on the property...but even then there are a lot of cheaper options. Okay

A small or regulated portion of good quality protein has to be better than nothing at all IMHO

A small or regulated portion of good quality protein has to be better than nothing at all IMHO Timered feeders have their place. Budget wise and travel distance for some make them the only alternative. If used right, they can be very effective. If I used them I would feed at night time only with them. Feeding from 10pm till 4am would almost guarantee buck usage during antler growing season. Bucks are nocturnal due to heat or travel distance from a feeder during this time of the year. By feeding them timered protein feed, they will do well. Any feed they would have been eating now is available for other deer(if it is any available).
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

My problem with the timed method is that the less dominant animals do not have equal opportunity to feed when availability is time limited.

It's splitting hairs at that point, as long as the same poundage is delivered and available it's irrelevant.

Full time availability allows the non-dominant bucks/does improved access.

I week or so ago I posted and asked what the impact of the long stretch of rain was having. Well I got out to my place at the end of the week and they have gone through over 400lbs of protein in 3 weeks! The feeder was empty and there was not a pellet anywhere to be seen. I had a few hundred lbs on hand and put that in. I'll be back in the next 10 days for another whack on my wallet but one I consider worth spending when I see how much they consume when it is dry like it is now. when it was wet earlier this year they ate very sparingly, not now. They're just letting you know when they need it. Kind of have to average out the high consumption and low consumption times when looking at the costs.
