I just got access to deer hunt 150 acres of freshly clearcut land. Any pointers or tips on how to approach hunting a clearcut. There is a heavy deer population as well in this area. The land has not been hunted since the 80's and im not too familiar with hunting clearcuts. Thanks guys!

Ask to create turkey tracks or long, narrow food plots along the SMZs.

Did they leave the tops and limbs (mulched is ok)? In a pine tree, 95% of the nutrients that were scavenged by the tree are in the tops and small limbs, if they left them, you should have good nutrients for up to 5 years. The next question is did they treat with herbicides? If the didn't there will be plenty of food. If there's lots of food, keeping in mind the wind, try to set your stand where you can watch existing trails from their bedding area, then enhance it with your feeder. If the clearcut was treated with herbicide the feeder itself will be an attractant.

Clear cut edges can be a gold mine. I'd place at least 2 stands, one in a southern corner and one in a northern corner and hunt the wind.

With 150 acres clearcut there should be several log sets. Try to clean them up and plant them.

In MN and NC they're referred to as landings. Landing is in the glossary of logging terms sets isn't. http://pacificforestfoundation.org/glossary.html#S

NSMike...you are on Texas Hunting Forum...when in Rome blah blah blah...In Texas they are known as a "set" because that is where the loggers "set" the logs. I don't know any loggers that are "landing" logs. "Texas English" is sometimes very literal. Just funnin ya!!

Might be where they land after rolling down the hill. Never heard them called landings. Heard sets and stacks all my life in a sawmill town.

I'm pretty familar with the lumber industry, in MN and NC, between my family and my wife's, never heard the term. Better to ask than assume.

I could come up with only two good spots. The first set up pictures will be at the back of the property where the woods continue on. This is were I found one of the log landings. The first picture will be looking towards where the food plot will go. The second will be looking from where I will place my stand. Approximately 150 yards. Looking towards future food plot at wood line.. Future food plot. Looking towards stand. Second location on other side of property. This runs along a creek as well. I saw a lot of tracks crossing where the feeder will go. 150+ yards between stand and feeder Looking at feeder location Looking towards stand location A pennie for your thoughts gentlemen.

Do it to it...keep the drags/roads clean coming into the sets. Deer are lazy and will use them from now to eternity if you keep them halfway mowed.

That is a lot better looking clear cut then some I have seen, looks like it has potential browse all over it already. Should do you real good even if you cant get a plot in this year.

How are the sets for wind? That would be my only question....both look good otherwise....

That drain crossing in the bottom pic is likely to blow out, so consider that if you absolutely have to get across it.

I'd look at getting some type of clover/forbs mix planted on that road before it gets grown up in tall grass.

Might not be a bad idea to just get stands in place...maybe even a climber and observe the first year to watch travel routes while it's still low enough to see. Maybe even put a feeder out in the middle that you can move later on. Get does coming way out in it, bucks will cruise it looking for them. I miss ours being that height so I could watch bucks all over it running does and thinking they were safe.

I like your sets. Nice distance and set up. My only advice would be to reconsider the east to west set as it will make it very difficult to hunt in the late afternoon when the sun is going down.

I agree about getting stands and feeder in place. This season will probably be your best as far as being able to see a lot of area but the new growth will cut your visibility sooner than you think.
Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.
