Going Elk hunting in western CO. It'll be a rifle hunt so I might be shooting out to 200-250 yards. I plan on using these 1 time and then using them strictly for deer hunting. Can someone point me in the right direction for binos. $250-499 range, cheaper the better of course. My buddy who went last year has a spotting scope, but said it isn't necessary up there as they got pretty close to most of the herds.

In that price range I would go Steiner XC 10x32. My steiners have been really good to me.

Well, first you need to pick your magnification and objective size. 7x is much easier to hold still than 10x, but the extra magnification is nice if you can steady it. More objective size is more light, but also more weight. Porro prism binos give you better glass for the $$ than roof prism binos, but the trade is weight for price, so they don't make much sense for elk hunting. The Nikon Monarchs are my go to choice in the $250-$300 range, but those Steiners mentioned above sound pretty interesting, if you feel that you can hold them steady. I'd consider going to one of the big stores like Bass Pro or Cabelas and look through as many binoculars as you can. It should give you a feel for weight and bulk and glass quality, at least to some degree. Then you can shop around for your best price.

Buy the best you can afford but be sure they are 10x40 or 10x42. Nikon has some in that price range that are very good.

I have a ZenRay ED3 right beside me in my home office to watch the deer at my two feeders behind the house. Mine is an 8x, but 10x would probably be a bit better in elk country. In the given price range, the Chinese binos are the best value out there. The ZR ED3 gives up very little to my beloved Leicas--we're talking miniscule.

What you need is some high powered ones! Those elk are hard to see! especially when there scurrying up a tree.
I'm a terrible shot but I follow up with a grenade!

The best you can afford, their is a lot riding on being able to see your game! On a out of state trip, I wouldn't skimp on hunting equipment, AND I would take at least 1 backup rifle!

cabelas has vortex on sale now, 10x50 would be best.
would help to know what part of western co. you are going to, doesn't take much to go from heavy pines and aspen to high desert out there.
