Sounds like a good move

"An overhaul of the process federal wildlife officials have used for more than half a century to set annual regulations governing migratory game birds means the state's half-million or so waterfowlers and dove hunters will know the rules - season dates, bag limits, zone boundaries - for the coming hunting seasons by early spring instead of late summer.

"This basically puts migratory birds under the same (regulations) cycle as resident game like deer and quail," said Dave Morrison, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's director of small-game programs. "We'll be able to let hunters know the (migratory bird) seasons at the same time all other hunting seasons are set. It's a good move - one we've been pushing for."

"TPWD staff plans to offer its 2016-17 migratory game bird seasons recommendations to the TPW Commission at the commission's January meeting, with the commission officially adopting the regulations at its March meeting, the same meeting the commission sets other hunting seasons.

The change means TPWD will be able to include all hunting regulations, including those for migratory game birds, in the agency's Outdoor Annual, the booklet containing hunting and fishing regulations. Because late-season migratory game bird regulations were not set until August, more than a month after the printing deadline for the Outdoor Annual that has to be available when new hunting/fishing licenses go on sale Aug. 15, the agency was forced to print a separate Waterfowl Digest to cover late-season migratory game birds."

How can they set bag limits before the spring population surveys are complete?

I would imagine everyone's hope would be to kick out duck season 30 days- assume if it's brought up a lot- would be a possibility....keep that in mind

I believe the dove season will be 20 days longer next year. It is 70 days this year and will be increased to 90 days next year. I'm ready!

I've yet to find the date for this year? Any assistance?
Is it memorial day?

From the article

"Under the new system, the two-cycle regulatory process has been combined into a single annual process. That process will begin months earlier than the previous system and base frameworks on biological data (populations, harvest rates, habitat conditions) from the previous year instead of, in the case of waterfowl, waiting until data from spring breeding population and habitat surveys are completed.

"The only thing that's really changing is some of the data used with ducks," said Kevin Kraai, waterfowl program leader for TPWD and the state's representative on the Central Flyway Council, a group of state/province waterfowl experts who recommend management moves to federal waterfowl officials. "We've been using the previous year's data for doves and other birds for a long time."

Feel like I'm playing cards with my brothers kids.
