They're not too tough to build if you read up first and follow a proven design. If you just want to do a little forging or heat treating a "venturi burner" will work. If you want the ability to forge weld then you'll want a "blown burner". Whether building or buying you'll find both of these sites very helpful:

http://www.hightemptools.com/supplies-mainpage.html

and

http://www.zoellerforge.com/sidearm.html

I've built several of the "modified sidearm burner" in both venturi & blown. Let me know if you have any questions.

I tried to contact Larry Zoeller but I haven't gotten a response from him.

I built two burners off of this book.

Not difficult, and they work well.

Here's a pic of my little setup. The blown burner is shown in the forge. You can see the hose off the back of my shop vac supplies air that I regulate with a gate valve. The gas line has a needle valve for gas control. The venturi burner is on the ground below.

When first done I wanted to make sure it got to welding heat. Here it is melting a RR spike.

Thanks D, I tried to pm u, do u like the blown burners better, I see the sidearm burner on the ground by, those are the ones Im thinking about making, those or the T burner. What are the dimensions of your forge, I'm gonna have to run 2 burners in mine, not sure if they'll be 3/4 or 1/2. Thanks

BW, my forge is made from a 5 gal air tank. Go at least 3/4" on the burner(s). 1/2" is too small (even with two) - too restricted on the air flow. I use my venturi burner for everything except forge welding Damascus.
