I have a Rem 700 ADL with a SS barrel and synthetic stock in 30-06. I have never been able to consistently get this rifle to shoot groups much tighter than 2" at 100 yds. I've tried different brands of ammo, different bullet weights, scopes, and mounts, and decent amount of practice. I'm far from a great shot, but I do have another rifle that I can get much tighter, so I don't think it is all due to me. While I'm sure this is probably "good enough" for deer at 75 to 125 yards, I'd like to try to squeeze a little more accuracy out of it.

With that in mind, I'm thinking of replacing the trigger and/or stock. It has the factory trigger (went thru the recall) and factory stock. Stock is not bedded and barrel is not free floating. Any opinions on which direction I should go first, or should I look in a different direction before those steps? Over the next year or so I'll probably do both, but I'd like to do one of the two now. Any input is appreciated.

1. Free-float the barrel. A forearm in contact with a barrel tends to be detrmental to consistency.
2. Put a Timney trigger in it. Recall or not, I will never trust a Remington trigger.

Check the muzzle make sure it's properly crowned, a sight nick or lack of symetry could cause your problems, if it's fine then do the stock.

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

You might as well bed it while you're doing those too. I'm betting those steps will cut the groups in half or better

Dump the plastic ADL stock and upgrade to at least a Bell & Carlson Medalist or a HS Precision. Watch for both on eBay and you can sell yours there.

For a bit more, McMillan is a major step up.

Have a competent gunsmith bed the stock.

A better quality stock will make it far more pleasant to shoot in addition to adding rigidity which likely will improve accuracy.

Make sure the barrel is really clean.

Try using Barnes Copper Solvent followed by some oil to clean it out, and/or Wipe Out.

In addition to what the others said, try different types of ammo.

Some will shoot better than others in the rifle, or try contacting ChadTRG42 here on the forum to work up some custom ammo for you.

Other factors, what scope and mounts are you using?

How often do you practice?

Accuracy is a result of four factors, all of which have to be in sync - a good rifle, good scope and mounts, good ammo, and most importantly a good driver behind it all.

I'd start with a B&C stock and Timney trigger. If these two upgrades don't get you where you want, you can have it bedded.

Seriously, I think you are barking up the wrong tree...lipstick on a pig is still always always gonna be a pig...you are wasting your coin and your time trying to get a remmy in that condition to shoot...sell it and Take that money, plus the money you were going to spend on it and buy a shooter... You will prolly end up going that route anyway and you will be much happier and have a gun that will split hairs...

The muzzle is crowned, no flaws visible to the naked eye.

I've been in the habit of cleaning after every trip to the range, which is on average twice a month, shooting about 20 rounds a trip. Normal routine is to use Sweets for copper fouling followed by Hoppes for powder/lead, then a patch with a little oil before it goes into storage. I did see posts from ChadTRG42 and FiremanJG that a slightly fouled barrel can improve accuracy, and taking a cold barrel shot without removing oil can lead to fliers.

I hear where you are coming from. From a economical point of view, you are absolutely right, but the rifle was a gift from my wife and my inlaws, and holds sentimental value. I'd be a turd to dump it.

So you're shooting only 20 rounds and cleaning it every time?

That is a big problem. About round 20 you get it good and fouled and ruin it by cleaning it. Try letting it go without cleaning it after every range trip. Chad and I let our go for hundreds of rounds before cleaning.

Yeah... Somewhere along the line I was told or got it into my head that was how I needed to take care of my rifle. I don't post a whole lot here, but I do read quite a bit. I was a little dumbfounded when I read what you and Chad posted on some other threads. I'll be changing that. Live and learn I guess.

First of all, I agree with fireman. You're cleaning that thing way too often. If you still get the need to clean it that frequently, just get a bore snake and run it every so often. But a good clean with solvent is not necessary all the time.

I had pretty much the same rifle but not SS and I understand getting committed to a rifle even though it might cost some coins. The Timney trigger will by far get you the most meaning and impactful improvement in results. I ended up getting a hs precision stock and that improved it only marginally. Just enough to notice a small difference. If your spending some money anyways, I'd also suggest ditching whatever scope mounts u have and switch to Talley rings. If at all possible see if u can get a torque wrench to ensure they're installed as properly as possible.

I'd go rings, trigger and then stock. Good luck.

New trigger and stock should do it. What glass do you have on it? This also makes a big difference.

Here is another vote that is cleaning too often. With a stainless barrel, there is no need to clean until groups open up more than the usual pattern. I clean mine every 400 - 500, unless there is a change in ammo.

Good luck.

He's right. I have a question. Are you recoil sensitive at all? You think maybe you're flinching a little before that ADL stock kicks you?

Itll be a pretty pig! roflmao

Seriously, I disagree with all the hate for Remington. Mine will shoot lights out if it stays cool. Heat that barrel up and it's all over.

Get that barrel off the stock and lighten up that trigger. Also a Sims recoil pad is nice. Shoot off a solid surface and do it on a non windy day. You can turn your dump truck into a Cadillac with these simple methods. Hey if it doesn't like it, Get a 20 in bull barrel rem 700 .308 tactical and see what happens.

I forgot to mention just in case u might not know, switching stock will generally require u to get another magazine/bottom metal system. Once again, I've been exactly where u were and finding an affordable hinged floorplate assembly was not the easiest thing for a long action. Plenty of short out there but not too many long. And finding a blind mag stock is even harder and usually not much of an upgrade.

Timney trigger and glass bedding will make a world of difference in my opinion.

Bolt, where are you located? Might be good to have an experienced guy look at it. A few other questions:

What brand and model of scope?

What brand and model of mounts and rings?

Can you post pics of groups? Vertical or horizontal strings?

Stock screws torqued properly?

Shooting from a solid bench with bags or other?

I'm no expert but a Remmy 700 should shoot much better than that.

I have 4 700s and three of them have 2.5# Timney triggers. Trust me that alone will make a big difference. You will never be happy with a factory Remington trigger again.

I have 2 700's left, both have Timney triggers in them.

I just don't shoot them much anymore. My daughter loves hers.

That is something I've had to work hard on. It came with a cheap no-name scope as a bundle. The first time I shot it I got hit right above my eye with the scope, since it had such poor eye relief. I've replaced the scope. Right now it has a Redfield revolution 4-12 x 40 mounted on Leupold standard rings/mounts.

It's a possibility that I'm flinching still, but I think I've gotten better about it. I do also have a .270 that I can group pretty well, and while the recoil is more in the 30-06, it's not drastic difference in my opinion.
