Any ideas as to what this is?
Isn't the best way to save face to keep the lower part shut?

Keep in mind that I'm fairly new to deer hunting, so don't flame me for this question. Is it possible your local game warden would let you take this deer, and not count against your limit? I'm not sure if I'd eat this deer.

This is probably way off, but is that anything like the Bullwinkle deer?

That looks bad. I would talk to the local warden and see what he says. Other than some type of tumor, a snake bite is the only thing that might cause that.

I would ask game warden which used to be a good friend but he passed away this spring. I can't find out who the new warden for our area is. This deer is in Nebraska.
Isn't the best way to save face to keep the lower part shut?

My game warden told me on something like that to apply the 3 S's: shoot, shovel, and shut up.

Most likely plugged tear ducts. We had a buck on our place that we called "Tear Duct" because he had an inflamed tear duct like that one year although it was not near as severe as that. His duct eventually cleared up and he turned into a really nice buck that another hunter on our place took last year. He still had a scar from the inflammation though.

That's a high possibility although this one appears to have a lot of inflammation and swelling under the skin. "Tear Duct" only had a golf ball size growth on the left tear duct and the face looked normal.

By the look of that deers body, that is something more than an inflamed tear duct. I'm not sure if that dear will make it

I'm not sure if I'd eat this deer. Ive asked before about putting down severely wounded deer and the answer has always been the same let mother nature handle it. If you going to shoot it and not tag it I'd be sure to apply the 3-S's
It's hell eatin em live

I'm thinking she's going to pass on before you get to the season.

Drop her off on the side of the road in N. La. She'll be alright a few minutes later.

Had a spike a few years ago on our lease with a nasty leg wound. It was obvious he would not recover from it. I called our game warden (Runnels County) at about 10pm, as the deer was literally standing in front of our truck about 40 yards away, and could barely walk.
GW gave permission to put him out of his misery.
Three weeks later, and NO critters had even touched him. That told me we did the right thing, he was in bad shape.
I have to wear sunglasses into the woods, because the deer would recognize me, an just surrender with their hooves up.
