State officials said Saturday that two additional deer from a captive herd in Medina County tested positive for a contagious, degenerative neurological disease, a discovery that could lead to the annihilation of an entire herd of deer. Two preliminary tests came back positive for chronic wasting disease, but confirmation will have to wait until samples are tested by the diagnostic laboratory in Ames, Iowa, officials said. Results could be available by the middle of next week, said Josh Havens, spokesman for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. http://www.statesman.com/news/news/two-more-deer-test-positive-for-chronic-wasting-di/nnBWn/

Word is they were very relieved it was not more.

yes, results came back yesterday afternoon. TAHC expected more and are somewhat happy with the outcome. Who knows how TPWD feel. Fortunately when all is said and done, they will have nothing to say about the matter.

Word is they were very relieved it was not more. Word is actually not word its reality, one is the original deers twin and half brother. They have an interesting hypothesis forming very quickly. One that if is correct is going to fix a lot of misconceptions

They'll need more help than they've got in research to prove that hypothesis...especially since it requires the mapping of multi-species chromosomes. Until then, wonder if they'll can straw shipments.

They don't need a paternity test.

From what I have heard every deer in those Medina County pens was DNA'd as a fawn every year. Also heard they were already looking at the genetics angle within a day or so of the first positive DNA test. Some pretty smart people on both sides of this ordeal. Just hope that they can find a way to work together to find the true source and put a stop to that first. Killing 1000's of deer won't be the answer since when CWD appears again (and it will in some non-related area) the sky will just fall again. I will say that the strongest deer will survive this over time, if given the chance.

I don't like the pens.
But I am not wishing for Texas to become the CWD capital of North America either. If that's what it takes to get rid of them it's too high a price to pay. I pray it never comes to that.

They've been working on genotyping humans for decades and still working out kinks. The Icelanders (deCode) have a knock-out method that would be interesting if they can figure out where the abnormalities are.

I am not including Elk in Texas in that I want them to mutate it and shorten incubation down to 3 months 3 weeks and 2 days....after finding some way to immunize domesticated ones.....
