For discussion, let's use winter wheat. Our place is in the NE Panhandle but until January, or so, it really doesn't get much, if any, colder than a lot of the state that is west of I-35 and north of I-20. In fact, I'll add some oats and expect them to last through deer season based on recent years.

Anyways, when do you or someone plant your plots?

Thanks!

Mid Sept - Early Oct.........depending on chance of rain, if there's a good chance during the mid Sept I'll plant if not I'll wait until the next chance of rain.

For the last 3 yrs going up to Western Kansas thru Abilene, Gutherie, Childress, Candadian, etc around Sept 15th I have seen where they planted small grains already. Same is happening in Western Kansas or already happened when I get up there around the 15th. I would ask a local feed/seed store or dealer for their input in your area. I know when we hunted at Jayton the farmers/ranchers had already planted before the first of Nov. since there was wheat growing(most of the time needing rain) already.

Thanks. I've typically planted Labor Day weekend and my results have been spotty at best. Even last year when I had decent rains before and after I planted. I'll probably wait until after Sept. 15 and see if I have better luck though I'm suspecting that some of it has to do with poor soil. It's mostly sand with a little clay mixed in.
