Seems like the $150 price range has some good feature cameras and I need to watch budget since I'm setting up myself with gear for the first time.
I'm overwhelmed by the number of different manufacturers and models. Seen some sales but research looks like they were older models that people didn't review well or a strange model number that had no reviews.
Anything to avoid? What's essential?

I've got some basic Moultrie's A-5's that I really like! Also picked up a Moultrie Trace. Its ok for the money but I prefer the A-5's to it. I've also got a Stealth cam that takes a fair picture, but I don't think I'd go with Stealth again. For me the A-5's from Moultrie take a very nice picture and are somewhat affordable.

We have been very happy with the Moultrie M-800 series. These are mini-cams that use double-A batteries. We have something like 12 going on the ranch right now. Some have been out for over three years straight without issue. They can be had in that price range.

What to avoid hmmm.. I'd say anything that has "Wild game innovations" on it.

Avoid? Cuddecrap, Wildgame Innovations, Stealth Cam.... I have had good luck with Primos Truth Cams, SpyPoint and Bushnell so far. Here is a link to a test and forum site on TC's. http://www.chasingame.com/

They all have their issues.
Just had a Primos 35 go out on me. Put new batteries in and won't turn on at all. I usually just find the cheapest one because they are all pretty much going to go out and no guarantees on how long.

You can't go wrong with the moultrie a5 or m8. I just started using the wild game innovations crush model last year. I bought another this year. I put it out last August and ran till January of this year and still had just over half batery life with the same six double a batterys. Great picture quality too for well under $100
