I read an advertisement of breeders selling Desert Bighorn Hybrids.
Why don't more game ranches have pure Desert Bighorns ? Like the ones you hunt via draw with the Texas Park and Wildlife.
Just curious. Is it illegal or too difficult to breed? I would think with the price the state of Texas is getting for Bighorn hunts that more exotic ranches would have Desert Bighorns.

Too many hoops to jump through, you would need permits, which would be tough to get. There are some captive breeding herds, it's not to hard to imagine that straws of semen for artificial insemination, are occasionally available.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

seems like every exotic ranch has axis, black, buck, ect. I would think having Desert Bighorns would set them apart from the rest.

We have these Alaskan Dall Hybrids on one of our ranches. The owner has been breeding a few. Those bighorn crosses are pretty cool Rams though.

1. You would think having pure desert Bighorns would be a money maker for the exotic ranches but I have not heard of any offering them. I still don't understand why any exotic ranches are not offering desert bighorns. 2. I would hate to see hybrids get out and breed with wild desert bighorns. Seems like it could mess with the genetics. I have seen a few hybrids that look close to wild bighorn but I would think a pure bighorn would be the goal Most hybrids appear a little more wooley Hybrid Wild Desert Bighorn

Doogie, Desert Bighorn are on the endangered species list, just how do you propose to get your ewes? The few permitted herds are for augmentation of wild stocks. Like I said, a few straws of semen from efforts with those herds may become available as surplus, but that's pretty much it.

Like I said, a few straws of semen from efforts with those herds may become available as surplus, but that's pretty much it. That goes back to my original question as to why ranches are not doing it. (the endangered list answers that question) I have seen pure wild bighorn semen for sale. Could you take some of these close bighorn hybrids and remove all ewes from the herd and keep inseminating with pure desert bighorn semen? Getting a 90+% desert big horn (after a few generations) but still keep it classified as a hybrid for hunting or resale purposes? This is just a question because I'm not in the exotic industry.
