A good friend of mine comes to me looking for help putting together a "hunt anything North America" rifle. But he did not want to build a custom rifle. I told him it would be a .300 Win Mag or a 7 Rem Mag. Of course the factory 7 Rem Mags won't run a 180 gr. Berger, but a factory 300 Win Mag will run a 210 Berger. So we got him a .300 Win Mag, added a Harrels brake and cerakoted it flat black, we have a Manners EH-1 on order. Yesterday I decided to get to fouling the brand new never fired barrel. I built 20 rounds of 180 gr. Noslers Dave3575 left at my place (thanks Dave) and a low powder charge of 75.0 gr of H-1000.

The first shot the barrel has ever fired, and my bore sight is the lowest impact. I made the necessary adjustments to bring the zero up to where I wanted it, and that is shot #2. 3, 4, and 5 were not cooperating with where I wanted it zeroed, but the barrel was getting pretty warm.

I let the barrel cool a bit, but it was still hot to the touch.

I let the barrel cool until it was almost back to ambient temperature. Shot #5 was not a pulled shot. If the rifle can put them in one hole, so can I. Again, a heated barrel made the flier. But this is a hunting rifle, and it will probably never shoot five shots consecutively.

Ok, paper is boring. I like shooting steel. How bout 600 yards on this brand new rifle, with no load development, and no chronograph data. I dialed up my 3.6 Mil of elevation (6.5 Creedmoor DOPE) and went straight to 600 yards. Shot #1 is the low center hit, but I saw it happen and brought the scope up .2 Mil. It started stringing due to heat again, but I hit the plate 5 times. Satisfied with that I grabbed a beer from the cooler.

Nice job. How long did you have to let it cool to get near ambient temp?

About ten minutes. I shot this a 5:00 yesterday and it was 97F.

When I do the load development for this rifle I am going to take a towel and a cooler of ice water. It holds togther very well for three shots, decent for four, and the fifth gets it too hot to hold your hand on the barrel plus clearly throws a flier.

Sweet. up

I have T3's in .30-06 and 7mm-08 that shoot just like that with my hand loads. The only thing remotely "custom" I've done to them is put them both in B&C Hunter stocks and add 5 round magazines.

I do need to put a muzzle brake on the '06. I like yours. cheers

Good shooting, gotta love Tikka's almost boringly accurate performance. Then again like Colonel Townsend Whelen wrote “Only accurate rifles are interesting”

I was never a fan of Tikka until I pick up a SAKO
now I have a Tikka .308, and 2 Sakos

it looks like a fine shooting rifle as is, hot barrel is always problematic for groups

I was shooting my 338 yesterday (300 Berger ) , 3 shots touching, starts to fly at 4, 5 ...

shooter next to me was making fun of me for taking too long to get my groups in
(had to let her cool in between )

somebody need to make a water cooler for barrels

I've gotten to where I put up two targets, one near and one far. The near target is for a favorite 22lr, to kill time while waiting for the centerfire rifle to cool down, between shot strings.

That, and I set up my spotting scope in an inconvenient place where I have to get up and walk over to it, to see how I've been shooting. I'll take my time at it, having a sip or two of soda, wiping my glasses, gossiping with my pardner etc..

Anything to kill a little time.

Kind regards, charlesb

Looks like a great set up! How is the recoil with the 300 Win Mag? I would think its a lot of recoil with the light stock.

The recoil is all there with the 180's, and it is going to get worse with 210's, especially if it shoots on a compressed load of H-1000. But as you were taught, get straight behind the rifle, load the bipod, slow steady squeez on the exhale. I put 20 rounds through and and was no worse for the ware.

You're a baller....using $5 bills to measure groups. I use quarters and dimes grin

Seriously, looks like it's gonna shoot. That's 180g of whoop [censored].

That muzzle brake has got to take at least some of the sting out of the recoil, right?

For sure.

The rifle was never shot without it, so I have no before and after to report.

I have a similar rifle in a sendero it has a break, shot the 210's recoil was still pretty sour but not bad. Shooting 190's allows me to stay on target better and I'm also using H1000. I went with the McMillan A3 and bedded the recoil lug, jewell trigger, and NF optics in MOA I know you hate but my brain is trained in MOA. Thinking of going with a suppressor but still educating myself on them to see if will be worth the coin. I have a Sako 7mm that shoots well, set up the same as the sendero, its a good 4 shot grouper 5+ starts walking away. I prefer the action on the Sako and the barrel on the sendero, love both guns.

The Sako and Tikka actions are just a fine tuned machine. Get a good shooting barrel to boot, so what's not to like?

Kind of splitting hairs to compare the two.
