SO... I'm gonna go with a .308 first, after talking to Fireman and some others I think it makes the most sense right now... I'll build a custom 300 later... I don't have the money now...I have had the idea of making a "short sword" truck gun for a while. I was thinking .308 would be good cause I'm not real worried about speed... I was thinking 16.5-18 inch barrel... this WILL be shot with a suppressor some.
So, I can get a good price on a Savage 10 fcp-sr... Never held it, wish a more vertical grip....but it comes threaded, with big bolt knob and detachable box mag... Mags are expensive though and it is a 20 inch barrel. A little longer than I would like. I have liked every savage I have shot...
OOOR... for about 50 bucks less... I can get a Howa Legacy, 20 inch heavy barrel(i'm a sucker for a solid heavy barrel) it has the Hogue stock, which I LOVE the feel of... Always heard they were shooters... I would want to get a big knob for it. And since I have to have it threaded anyway I could get it cut down to my hearts content... Main issue with the Howa is that I have to order a bottom metal replacement to use detachable box magazines, but i have been told p-mags fit... this would be ideal Figure about 200 bucks in gun smithing... buuut I get more what i was thinking...
trying to decide what to do... what do yall think
Sombody smells like fried borritos...

I just bought the Savage 10 FCP-SR. I'm liking it a lot so far. Has all the options I wanted, ACCUTRIGGER and ACCUSTOCK are both leaps and bounds infront of the Howa trigger and stock. Plus I bought it when the $100 mail in rebate was going on so that was even more of a plus. My buddy has one of the 24" Howa with the DBM and Hogue stock. Having shot both, I'd get the Savage any day of the week and twice on Sunday if choosing between the two. Mine in action.

Remington 700 5R if you can find one, about the only decent rifle remmy still offers...
OOPS, sorry, just saw your budget, I think the 5R's are a little over a "G"

Also, I run my suppressor on a CMMG MK3 CBR 308 with the 16" barrel and really not a huge difference over the 16" vs 20" barrels. I really don't want to stand and hold either of them for a long period of time that 25oz can hanging off the end isn't fun to hold for long.

OR, a savage 10P-SR with 18" heavy barrel, threaded muzzle, 5R rifling, detachable mag, and oversized bolt knob... http://www.tombstonetactical.com/catalog...aded-4rd-black/$587.99 with free shipping! 3 in stock. I ordered mine from this same place. Great place to do business with. I have one and love it. It's what I used for the Hunter rifle challenge back at the beginning of the year.

Ruger Precision Rifle for $1000.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I've heard nothing but good stuff about Howa rifles. They're basically a weatherby vanguard with a floated barrel in a hogue stock. Really good setup.
That being said, I'd go with the Savage, and I'd consider a Savage 11VT from Dicks also. The FCP-SR is about $150 more expensive. With that money, you could have the barrel cut & threaded at the length you want and put a custom bolt handle on it (about $30). Sell the Bushnell scope that comes with it, and you're even more in the black.
The FCP-SR gets really bad reviews for DBM reliability, so you're probably buying bottom metal and new mags either way if you're dead set on a DBM. And it's about $200 IIRC when I was doing my research.

DING, DING, DING! Two days in a row! Weird Not even close to the price of the other two. But maybe if this guy is talking about a custom, that's not a problem. But it's over double the price of the 11VT Savage.

Well he can get a whole rifle for the price of a stock for a custom. I don't care either way it's his money. I will never give props to a savage because they are ugly

CONSIDERING THIS... no if I get a custom built... it will be one of AP's value rifles right now... and i will have to come in and pay on it for a WHILE... then in a few years get a full on B.A. built in a hot rod caliber with a custom action... anybody want to cut a deal buying the used savage for a set price in about 8 months lol

I'm on a different budget. I haven't even bought that stock pad yet, so the idea of putting $1k into a $400 gun is really foreign to me.

$400 is a smokin deal on a good action.
Price a Surgeon, Defiance, or Stiller.
Why I had no reservations of spending $550 on a Tikka just for a donor rifle. Only needed the action. And the action is really just to get the cartridge out of the mag, put it in the chamber, fire it, and eject it. Machine a high end, cut rifled barrel on just about any action and it will shoot.
