The last few times I've taken my dog to my family's ranch in the Panhandle, he's picked up several ticks that aren't phased by his current topical medication. I think the ticks are deer ticks (versus dog ticks) since their numbers have increased as the deer numbers have increased.
Regardless, anyone had this problem and found a good topical or collar or chewable? Thanks!

What topical do you use? Some are better for fleas than for ticks.
Preventic collars work very well, IME. For continuous use, a collar will last 3 months, minimum. I know some weekend ranchers will collar their dogs while visiting the country, then when they return to the city, they remove the collar and put it in a zip lock bag that they store in the fridge until the next trip. Seems to work pretty well.....

Currently using Revolution which works fine for around here but not up there. Don't really care if the tick med. keeps them off or kills them as long as the med prevents an infestation and disease.
I'll look into the Preventic collar. Any other experiences or recommendations?
Dawaba - do you use the collar along with anything else such as a topical or does it take care of fleas as well?

I use the Seresto collar. It has worked very well for me and it will still work if your dog likes the water. It shortens the collars lifespan but that is it.

I use the Preventic collars, if I'm taking the dogs to a place that I know will have ticks.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Dawaba - do you use the collar along with anything else such as a topical or does it take care of fleas as well? Karen and I do a 3-mile country walk with our two dogs every morning. We are also using Revolution on them because Teddy throws up Trifexis, which most vets believe is superior to Revolution. Neither product does a very good job on ticks, although both are good for fleas and heartworm prevention. We also use a Preventic collar that we replace every 3 months, year round, because EasTex ticks are a problem all year long. I became sold on the Preventic collar when I found out that my bird dog clients could put a collar on their dogs at the beginning of quail season in the fall and the collars were still working in February when the season ended. That's longer than 3 months. I don't believe I've ever seen an attached tick on a dog wearing a Preventic collar. Edit: unfortunately, Preventic collars won't work on fleas, but your Revolution will (pretty well). Were I you, I'd stay with Revolution monthly, and then affix the Preventic collar a couple days before you head for the ranch. When you get back home, remove the collar and zip lock it. I think you'll get your money's worth that way.

Ivomec(down the throat) and Happy Jack kennel dip occasionally. I used to get cattle ear tags at the feed store and cut them down to about an inch circle and attach them to their collars. Never had ticks or fleas.
