Guys,

After getting things in order to buy from CMP next week I need some advice on what I should be looking for. As for the Garand M1 my understanding it's important to check the throat but when I looked for the tool it'd cost almost $60.00 to get the tool which I'd only use once. So is there another way to check throat erosion? Also what else should I be looking for?

Thanks,

Mel

I thought they were marked with ME and TE.

I'm pretty sure CMP inspects them and gives you that information as well as other useful info.

When you get there (which location?), ask for Gunny. He's in the South location, but they'll have one at the other too. He will guide you to what you want. The good stuff is all together in a rack. Buy the one he says you should buy.

Do not forget to look over the field grades. Occassionally they have rack and field grade Winchesters with their original winchester barrel. If you can find one of these, personally I would not care what the TE/ME reading is on it - get it.

I’ve owned versions from all four U.S. manufactures and my favorites are H&R. They always seemed to have the best overall quality & finish. Rumor has it that they hung a sign in the factory stating “Built it as if it was being issued to you son”. They benefited from various improvements made over the years, weren’t produced during a war (rushed production = cutting corners), and were in service the least amount of time, so less overall use.

That said, I’d look for a high number H&R or Springfield (a close second). By comparison, my Winchester and International Harvester are poorly finished, rough with far too many deep milling marks.

Yup, that's the way I see it, as far as finding a shooter goes. My H&R's are definitely better finished than the others, though my Springfield's do come in a close second.

If in snake country find one with a floor in it. They like to come in and scare the hell out of you.

What is your intent with the rifle? Winchesters with an original factory barrel are somewhat scarce, definitely a collectors item, if otherwise in decent shape. If you want to shoot it, fit, finish and wear, are important, especially in the barrel.

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

I am debating a trip out to a cmp to get a garand just for historical value.

I went back in December for the first time with almost no knowledge , the staff was amazing answered any questions and the armorer there helped me pick two rifles. he looked at over 50 , using a te/me gauge before he found me two showed me how to field strip and reassemble . Check the cmp forums , they give weekly store reports and you can even give them a call and ask what they have on the racks . Don't forget they have ammo . en bloc clips, bayonets, slings there too.

^ What he said.

They will all be tagged with the manufacturer, muzzle erosion, and throat erosion. Don't be afraid to ask for help from the workers or other people. Also, I recommend getting there early. At least 30 mins, but there will probably be people waiting already. Here are the hours: Thursday-Saturday, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m

I'm heading that way today. Going to see family and then on Thursday the store! Can't wait to see what they have! My only regret? Not going earlier when they had more to choose from.

Has anyone bought any of the other guns they advertise? The .22 target rifles? How about the ammo? Good? Do they have 30-06 and 308? Anything else I should be on the lookout for? Has anyone bought a bayonet with the rifle?

Better grab some of the Greek HXP .30-06. Stock up before the election and save on shipping.

If you're not careful, the CMP can be addictive. It's too bad all the bolt guns are pretty much gone.

If you are fortunate enough to make a trip to one of the stores, check out the CMP forum for the store reports (North or South) for an inventory report.

For mail order... yellow sticky notes still work. Just received a 3M Springfield with original barrel in a service grade (MW of 1.5) that still had USGI wood on it.

Forgot to add...
For any trips to the stores, donuts are highly appreciated if you show up early in the morning and wait in line.

Can you just show up and buy one or do you have to do something before hand?
