My good friend has the puppy and intermediate DVDs.

I watched some of the intermediate and it seamed pretty good.

Intermediate went through everything but blinds and casting.

Any reviews?

Tim Dokken came up with a Ducky Dummy.. That's pretty much it.

Angie, as far as training purposes what do you think about the DVDs? They would be free for me to use.

Was planning on using Hillman's but if these are comparable I can have them for free.

Just a general observation, there are a lot of ways to train a dog, some are better than others. In some cases individual dogs respond better to one method vs another then the next pup is just the opposite. At the top levels the different approaches to training result in near blood feuds between trainers. What's more important is that the method suits you as a trainer and that the end result is a dog that pleases you.

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

I like a bunch. But they actually trained dogs that did something.

And whose book or CD would you recommend?

I like the Danny Farmer and Judy Aycock series,, Retriever Training Basics and Problems and Solutions
All of Mike Lardy's stuff
Training your Retriever by Billy Eckett and Bobby George, pretty basic.
Sound Beginnings by Jackie Mertens for puppy's
Fowl Dogs with Rick Stawski, quite a few clients have used this.
Smart Works by Evan Graham, He does tend to ramble quite a bit. Make sure you get both the books and the DVD,'s. If you were to get just one, get the books.

For books I like:
Training Your Retriever to Handle by D.L. Walters
Carol Cassity's Building a Retriever
Cherylon Loveland's Retriever Puppy Training Book
Jim Spencer, Training your Retriever for Marshes and Meadows is good for the Force Fetch Section. Actually it's excellent.

Stay away from the Wildrose or Tarrant stuff.

Angie, do you know if Mike Lardy's "Total Retriever Training" includes puppy training? It does not say in the description.

I found that it does include puppy training.

I also see that he sells an E-collar DVD and marking DVD. I assume the total retriever program would cover e-collar and marking?

I guess what really want to know is what program or set of DVDs do y'all recommend that will cover everything I need from puppy to advanced training?

It looks like Total Retriever Training second addition includes the collar conditioning and marking. So go for the second addition. It includes the material from the first addition with a lot more detail and descriptions.

All Right Bobbie!! Good Luck! And if you plan on doing any waterfowling with your spaniel, get working with it on water pdq.

He already loves the water. Tin trough from Tractor Supply is jumped in 2-3 times a day. 1st time was an accident but then he liked it. He was playing with another dog who was on the other side of the trough and took the short way. Submerged, swam to other side and pulled himself out and started chasing the other dog. Heck maybe he meant to do it. I know it was funny. Headed to the lake this weekend with him.
