I have a 6 month old Brittany that i introduced to water today, tried luring her in with a dove wing, and some treats, and she wouldn't come into the lake. Tried calling her many times. I'm watching a GunDog DVD, that says not to force them in, so i'm just being patient. i went in the water myself, when trying to call her in, making sure it was shallow. Any ideas or tricks?

Also, she is 6 months old and not really fetching much of anything, wondering if there are any ideas to bring out that prey drive?

You may want to have the pup evaluated by a pro. If she has no prey drive by that age you may want to get rid of her and get a new pup.

I just hangout around the water, and walk through the shallows. Mine have always ventured in on their own, or following another dog. I don't really encourage them much, just let it happen naturally. As hot as it been, I would think she would want to drink from the lake, and do a little cooling off, even if its just in a few inches of water. I would just keep taking her back, and see if she comes around.

Maybe pickup some live pigeons (clip their wings)and see if they up her intensity for birds.

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Time and patience. Might want to run her around a bit before you get to the water, then she might be more willing to go in. Not to discourage you but I have a couple of Brittany's that don't care much for water, will only stop for a drink and a couple that would stay in water all day, then a couple more that only go in to cool off some but still don't ever swim.

Each dog is different. Just be patient. I had a GSP that dove off the end of a pier at 9 weeks, and my current lab that would touch the water until 5 months. Obviously the GSP didn't need any encouragement, but it took me sitting in a couple of inches worth of water at the lake and encouragement for my lab to get in. Now three weeks later and working with him in the neighborhood ponds he will dive in a retrieve for me. I also have a friend with a 9 month old lab that still wont get in the water. It all depends on the dog. Be patient and encouraging, and you should be fine.

The prey drive is a different issue.
