looks like perennial smartweed to me. the good smartweed that everyone talks about drawing and holding so many birds is an annual smartweed that has a pinkish colored bloom. Will what you have hold some birds and provide a couple decent shoots? depending on weather probably at some point or another in the season. Would millets, rice, or milo do better? most definitely

What to do? Don't mess it up! Well done on a nice stand of smartweed ; it's hard for me to tell for sure by the pics, but I'm pretty certain you have the pink smartweed. Which is what you want.
Is this your first year to plant? Meaning, did you broadcast seeds or just disk up for soil disturbance and rejuvenate prior year plantings? If it's first year growth, pretty sure you can't manipulate by grazing, fire or disking. After year one, you're good.
With all that being said, if it were me....I'd leave some open ground around the existing stand before planting again and be in some sort of position to hold water in late October / November and let it all drain out until then.

We fixed the hole in our dam so all this great rain from Spring held and grew the size of my wetlands by 2x from prior years. I didn't plant anything or manipulate the soil so all of this is just natural growth in an area that is typically bone dry.
