I am considering getting a Heeler puppy. She will be a farm dog and will need to learn to not chase\kill chickens. Our chickens are free range. With that said would a shock collar teach her to leave them alone? I had hell getting my GS to leave them alone when she was growing up. I got to the point I thought I was going to have to give her to someone. We worked thru it though and now she doesn't chase them. Cost me 4-5 chickens while she was learning. I want the easy method of teaching a new pup to leave them alone. So would training her with a shock collar work?

I'm old school. If a dog jumps on a chicken: Pick him up by the ears and kick the sht out of him. If he kills one make him drag it around for a few days tied to his collar.

That will solve your problem.

Just let him get close to a hen that has just hatched off her chicks while he is a puppy. She'll break him.

I'd use the shock e-collar.

Try to teach the No command and use the E collar to reinforce the command. NOTE I would use the vibrate or tone only if possible. The key is teaching the No command which you will need in other areas as well.

I'd use the hot button. That's what they use on snake breaking.

I would knock his butt for a loop on high just as he is bearing down on the chicken. Light him up. That dog has got to think that the chicken just whipped him. I promise that the dog will be okay. And so will the chicken.

E collar is the way to go. It makes a bad dog tolerable, a good dog great and a great dog exceptional. It's less risky than beating the $hit out of a hound like out pappy's did. The magical force of electricity is not something even a stubborn strong headed mongrel wants to tempt.

This probably won't ever come up. Farm dogs have coexisted with chicken for years.

At the risk of offending someone, this is not advice. This belongs in the horse crap section so far as training advice goes.

If you want the training to work it must not come from you. The dog has to make a decision that he wants nothing to do with chickens. In other words if you tell the dog no, you just made a decision for him. You have not convinced him chickens are the devil.

So put a collar on him and leave. Go inside the house, grab a chair, a drink and a sandwich. When the dog goes for the chicken wait until he just gets ahold of it and let the lightning go. Hold that button down until he turns to run away, if he looks back, hit him again. You let off pressure when he is headed out. So with you out of the picture the dog is forced to make a decision and that decision is chickens are the devil.

My little black bitch used to go coop and get the chickens. I sat there for 2 hours and finally I saw her run by the window. She went into the coop and I couldn't see her. I gave it 5 seconds and switched the mega watts on. When she came out of the coop she was tumbling and howling. That has been 5 years and I still can't get her near a chicken. She is the tpe of dog that likes to stay at heel ALL THE TIME. When I walk towards the coop she stops. If I call her she puts her head down and takes one step. I call her again and she will take another. It is obvious she thinks the devil lives in the chicken coop.

We're talking about a little puppy. I was wrong advise you to use the collar on a little puppy. Just walk him among the chickens. Farm dogs have lived among chickens for years.
