I need some info on English Setters. How easy are they to train, how are they in the field and would I be making a mistake on purchasing one over a EP that is at the same training level and age? Thanks in advance!!!!!

As with all hunting breeds it is hard to stereotype English setters as so many variables come into play. It would be helpful to know more of what type of range you are looking for, what you will be hunting, and some pedigree info. to provide you with some feedback. I will say the obvious difference is the hair, some people just don't want to deal with the grooming. Personally it is not a big deal to me, been doing it so long it is less than 10 minutes about every other month.

I think generally speaking would be a good term for what I'm looking for and should have posted that to begin with. I know each dog will be different, no matter what breed but wanted to get an idea if the majority of ES can be compared to EP or even GSP. I have no experience in bird dogs other than the knuckle head GSP I have. Thanks folks.

I always heard those shags were excellent at backing pointers. roflmao

I've only had one setter. She was not as productive as my worst pointer.

Go ask three hunting guides in your area what they run and prefer, then you can tell us.

I love to watch field bred setters work. They are gorgeous. Have been around some good ones. It has been my admittedly limited experience, that they are softer, and tend to take longer to come around than pointers do.

Be careful now. I have two setters right now that I will put up against any pointer and more than hold my own in the field. My female is so competitive that if she has to back once, I guarantee you that she will have the next 3 finds and I don't care what flavor dog is in the field. I love pointers and I have had a lot of them, but these two setters are the greatest I have ever owned. My two are bird finding fools, single focused. Let me know this season if you want to test my opinion of these setters. We are game!

Hold up folks, didn't intend for this to be competition, just wanted to know some opinions about the dogs you have owned or hunted behind to assist me in the search for a started dog. But thanks for the input.

I went setter this time, hard headed pushy and a PIA. In other words a bird dog puppy. Love him to death.

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

How good of dog you get depends on the hours it can spend in the field and time spent training your dog. This is an area where beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Also from your post I believe you need a dog that can train you, and I am not being mean but their is no substitute for experience.

If it isn't white it is not a birddog.

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.

I agree 100%, I have no experience training a bird dog, and have only 44 miles walking behind my GSP per my GPS UNIT so I'm open to all opinions. THANKS FOR THE FEED BACK.

I was just joking about the setters. I've seen some great ones handled by EJ Hall and Harold Ellis that were flat out awesome.

Catch Dog, you can't go wrong with an ES. In my opinion today's setter is much better than grandpaws. We've been running setters in walking and horseback trials for 5 yrs now and I tell you they can run as big and find as many birds as any pointing breed. Setters today are not as soft as the ones I had back in the early 80's. With the success of 3xNat Ch Shadow Oak Bo in the field trial world I believe there will more setters in the bird fields and at the big trials. I've personally had my hands on 4 of his offspring and I promise you they are tough birddogs with great noises. Can't go wrong with a English Setter.

I have a EP, a GSP and a Setter Lewelleyn and the setter has grown up with me and gets better every season. The EP is a furious retriever and the GSP is a long lasting very game bird finder. The Setter is moving up on both of the older dogs who came to me trained. The setter is my favorite as she is so affectionate and easy to correct. Just my thoughts.

All you bird doggers are invited to come see what we offer.

I wouldn't trade for my setters. They're great family dogs and it's hard to beat watching one float across a pasture and then slam on a point.
