The guys who sold off all there bird hunting gear and dogs because of low bird numbers. Are they buying it all over again or staying away from bird hunting forever

Too bad so sad. I don't feel sorry for them one bit, just goes to show it's all about killing for some. I will be out there watching my dogs work until I can't anymore. Even if it was just pen raised birds.

I think they'll be gone for good. NSTRA is having a tough time filling fewer trials.

Agree with Bill To the question I fear they are gone for good. I think it will be very difficult to get the interest in upland birds in the future like there has been in the past.

Agree with CC I am like CC watching the dogs if birds or no birds is better than no bird dogs. Hell I like watching mine now go for all these damn frog like creatures everywhere with all the rain.

I am committed to doing my part to keep bird dogging and chasing birds alive into the future. I have discount hunts for youth experiences.

It still is not what it was. My lease still has zero birds, there is nothing left from the drought years for seed to recover there. Cost to hunt private places with birds is too high for the working man and cost will only increase in places birds rebound. Management on public has improved, but managing big game is still where the bigger interest and big money is. Most Marketing pushes the new generation towards Big Game and Turkey. The two types of hunters don't mix well with concurrent seasons either so it is difficult to hunt a lot of public areas with dogs. The marketing for waterfowling is even worse making it look like some kind of extreme sport so it is a big draw to the young generation of hunter. Then there is put and take birds which can be fun sometimes, but it is not the same as hunting wild birds to me. I even see a different intensity in my dogs when on wild birds vs released birds. So nothing changes for me. I still have to hit the road and drive far, sometimes very far, to find huntable public land quail. Or I go hunt other upland game and migratory birds. If I were a quail hunting purist rather than a versatile hunting dog person, as much as I love the gentleman's hunt, I would not stay in or get in the game of quail hunting alone at this point in time.

I'm buying back in; dogs, polaris ranger, leases, rv, guns, gps collars, etc Our two oldest boys are into sports heavy, but they also want to hunt too. We started them very young. They really enjoy bird hunting. We're gonna hit it pretty hard this year. Hope everything pans out like it should.

The good is I have access to wild birds about an hour from my house. The bad is it only holds give or take, around 100 birds. Its enough to work the dogs, and take a bird here or there, but I really don't do a full hunt.
I also run my dog on put and take hunts for customers. Even with this being close by I wouldn't reinvest in a bird dog, if I had sold mine off. I probably would have pickup golf, or something else to spend my free time.
I like John have a versatile dog, so I can normally find something to hunt with him.

man, this is a depressing thread. I've never been a hunter myself because my dad simply wasnt into it. So i am an adult onset hunter, and this will be first season. Quail interest me more so than ducks, or doves... but I guess I should be glad I have a versatile breed.
