Is it possible to drill and tap a Model 60 to put a scope rail on it? I just really don't like the dove tail mounts and a Weaver style rail and real rings would be a lot more secure.

I found that it is not necessary with quality mounts. What I wound up with are the Leupold vertically split rings/mounts.

These are attractive and have given very good service.

You can, of course, drill and tap the Model 60 receiver - but then there's the problem of no mounts being made for that. You'll end up having to make the mounts, too.

I suggest using quality mounts, de-grease the grooves and put a bit of thread-locking compound into them, just prior to installing the mounts.

That ought to hold. - It's worked for me.

Kind regards, charlesb

They make Weaver mounts for a model 60, some Model 60s are even drilled and tapped for them.

https://www.combathunting.com/Marlin_Acc...eaver_Rail.html

I don't really think its necessary. I have had mine mounted on dovetail mounts for about 13 years now, and never had an issue. Then again, with QC of modern Marlin rifles, the dovetail might not be cut square. I have heard of that happening.

Mines not anywhere near new. And it hasn't been a problem for me but honestly, I don't shoot it a lot. This year though I have been carrying it on the golf cart at the lease and shooting coons and skunks with it. I've just seen them in the past where the mounts slide forward or back with vibration.

If you decide to go with a D&T approach, I'd use an appropriate sized Pic Rail for a base, and D&T to that rail's screw holes, and use standard cross bolt rings from there....but I'm not about to D&T the new & unfired looking Marlin 781 that came to me recently.

Believe it or not I'm having trouble finding 3/8th's grooved TipOff's that'll accept a 40mm objective in stock anywhere....I'm mounting a leftover 3x9x40 Sightron S1 on the gun if possible. Found some Weaver Quad Loks at SWFA, but no info on the objective size accepted @ either Weaver or SWFA, and SWFA's shipping was as much as the rings cost...so that's out too. Brownells has some Burris Steel TipOffs in Mediums at $36 + shipping, but they are out of Millets in steel & aluminum that'd work for me price wise. Oh Well

The link provided by CWK has one designed for the ones that are already D&T so I will probably go with that. Now to find a smith that will do it for me.

Agreed that you do not need to drill and tap for the model 60. Like you, I figured I'd get mine done eventually, but before that happened I got a used one with a Bushnell scope mounted already (see link, same setup)

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/388644/...ith-rings-matte

The cheap scopes that come with the rifle are ok, but the rings aren't worth scrap, nor can they go a couple hundred rounds without getting loose. This other setup, when I first got the rifle, I shot close to a brick through it, along with about 70 CCI Stingers, and all without a problem. Don't know who had it before me, but I got it from a pawn shop and it held zero from the last owner and hasn't failed me yet. I've shot about another brick total since then, and it isn't loose in the least.

Have fun, be safe.

I have a cheap bushnell on it. Have for twenty years or more. Just ordered a Redfield from midway for it. Just have seen the mounts move on a couple of other peoples. I prefer the real rings. If I can't get it done locally and reasonably I'll just live with what I have.

I went with a one piece mount made by UTG. It has three screws and the total clamp area is around 4". I honestly think the dovetail would shear before the mount failed.

The little CZ 527 has groves for scope mounting much like most semiauto 22s do. Wanted something else and found DIP when searching for another mount. This one is solid so far on a Grendel boltaction with a Bushnell 6500 scope which is not a light weight scope.

They make them for your Marlin also

Hmmm...10/22s come with DTd receiver and a rail with screws. Yes, I'll get flamed. I still thought 60s had DT holes.

BTW, what must one subject a .22 rifle to so as to loosen the rings?

Pass the gravy.

Something different about the DIP rail mounts they do not clamp onto the groove in the same manner as rings or like some of the other rails do. They slide onto the rails and you will think they are a little loose at first. The way they tighten up is the set screws in the top when tightened pull the whole rail up against the upper surface of the groove.

Thats what I thought would be how they did it, and why the connection is prolly gonna really stout.

Just got a Vortex CF II 4x12x50 A/O from CLNY yesterday to replace a 3x9x40 Buckmaster I'd bought earlier this spring to go on my "truck gun" T/C Venture wearing a Warne Maxima system... that blows me away with the clarity and stuff....but I can see with the DIP Pic Rail how, if I had a really accurate grooved & non D/T'd shooter, where the DIP Pic Rail should be heads and shoulders a better mount system...and about the same $$'s as the steel grooved tip off rings I'm seeing in the market right now, that had been the best thing I'd found for hard use situations.

Hmmm??? VT makes the same CF II in a 4x12x40 A/O... that'd be ideal on a 22lr squirrel shooter...finding these "New & Improved" ideas is getting 'spensive for sure, but should be a one time fix for a problem I've had in the past in tip off rings working loose when I stumble around in the woods like I normally do smile.

Don't spend $200 for a scope on a $160 rifle, right?

GG It's easier to find a sub $200 older Marlin rimfire shooter that'll keep MOA or less than it is to find a sub $200 quality piece of glass with all the bells & whistles.

Right now I'm hitting a little over the target budget of 2 Bills on the guns side in my last 2 purchases this year...but am beating that $ # on scopes for the intended rough use categories.

It PO'd me that I'd slept thru the Steal of a Deal aka Deal of the Day from CLNY last April on the scope that I just got from CLNY at lots less than the target budget #.

One of the things I like best about CLNY, beside their excellent service that most folks loose sight of like I did, is that they Honor their DOD offers as long as they have inventory on the Sale Item...and you can find that List of previous DOD offers at the very bottom of the Blog Page in the page #'s shown by date. Just Sayin' Snooze Ya Looze.

As far as spending more on the glass than the shooter, I'd remind you of another Old Timey Truism that has been dogging me lately..."If'n Ya Can't See 'em...Ya can't Hit'em...No Matter how accurate the Gun or Shooter is".

Maybe....but it's a Marlin 60 that doesn't need any bells or whistles.....but it does sound fun. A scope is expensive when it gets to triple digits at my house ... hahahaha!

My M60 isn't the most accurate 22 LR I own, that is for sure, but its good enough to shoot squirrels and cans. I bought mine for either 90 or 95$ new from Dicks sporting goods when I turned 18. I took it squirrel hunting, and I couldn't see the big block iron sights in the woods. I put whatever 4x scope and rings on it that walmart sold at the time. I think it was a $29 BSA scope and some generic split vertical rings. Sighted it in 13 years ago, and haven't touched it since.

Colt right now I got 2 leftovers to play with ... a cherry 2x7x32-34? Banner that is unmarked & a dinged up super clear Jap made 3x9x40 Sightron S1 that gives 1 1/2"+ 100 yard groups out of my Marlin 39D carbine shooting some 30+ year old ammo & am into both scopes for lots less than a $100 bux total. Just missed 'nuther Jap made S1 like it last week asleep at the wheel for under $50 shipped from out of state...so there's decent 22lr scopes out there.

Just Sayin' however ... IMO to give a Rimfire shooter a chance to shine you really need an A/O on it and not a fixed 100 yard paralax piece of glass. If/when I pick up a 22LR Self Loader and discover it Might be a real shooter...I'll most likely spring for something like the Vortex CF II 4x12 A/O I just bought so's I can take nuthin but ear hole shots.

If'n the Better Half'd it let me hunt tree rats off the front porch I could host a squirrel & dumplins feed for lots of folks...but she "Likes to watch them Play"... until they get in her bird feeders 'n sic's the dog on 'em.
