Wish it never happened, but as we all know it will every year. If you shoot a deer, and hit it in the spine with your arrow how do you finish it off? Do you stick another arrow threw them, or use a knife and hope you don't get kicked or stuck with an antler. If you do use a knife or arrow, do you go from the front of the neck towards the butt, or from underneath up towards the spine?

Like I said, hopefully this never happens to myself or anyone else, but I would love to know how to handle a situation like this if it did happen. Thanks!

Nock another arrow. The spine shot actually is the shortest tracking job you will do with a bow.

If you don't have a pistol walk up behind him, step on his ear, push your knife in the crease in his throat and pull it through the bottom. Don't get kicked.

I was told that during archery only season in October unless you had a CHL you could not carry a pistol. This has only happened once to me and I used my knife to finish the job. It just seemed the quickest way.

I'm actually going on a controlled hunt in McAlester OK where it is traditional bow only. No guns allowed. So if I spine shot one then, what would y'all do?

If you're capable put the second arrow in the vitals.

Second or even a third arrow if needed.Deer should not suffer and a sharp broad head thru the vitals makes for a quick death.

Last deer I spined I got up behind it and stuck my knife in its neck.

If you haven't done it before be prepared as blood is gonna start pouring out.

That being said, there is alot of things that can happen, it's best to put another arrow in it ifs possible instead of knifing it

Just put another arrow in it. Had it happen to me about 3 times.

We had a guy shoot a deer in the spine the land owner walked up and stuck his knife in his throat believe it or not the deer jumped up kicked the him in the side and broke two ribs. We will never do that again best just to put another arrow in him.

knife ... it can hurt you too ... be cautious! My dad shot a nice buck (rifle) grabbed it by the antlers to cut its throat, buck jumped up and took off, dad in tow with thumb hooked on G1. They are pretty strong even as small as they may seem.

My buddy broke one's back with a 30-30 from like 250 yards - amazing shot but not the point.

We tried to pick it up and carry it back to the truck because we didn't have another shot or knife on us. I'm holding the rear legs and we make it about 30 yards when all of the sudden I can just sense a whole lot of power returning. Can't even drop it in time and that sucker mule kicked me with both legs right in the chest. Sent me cartwheeling and left probably the worst bruises I've ever had, but didn't break my ribs fortunately.

It still couldn't stand up, but we didn't chance it and just ran back to the truck, got a knife and finished it off. Lesson being, regardless of what you think, stay the hell away from those hind legs. You might have just damaged some nerves or bruised the spine but not totally paralyzed the hind quarters.

And you do not want to know what those things can do.

If the deer is still in range I'd knock another arrow and shoot again, provided the shot wasn't the result of an equipment problem.

IIRC laws changed last year and you can now carry a sidearm.

Yes they did, I hunted with a rifle and a bow during archery last year. It was nice to have to rifle for passing coyotes, hogs or exotics.

Did it last year on a doe. Grabbed another arrow, drew and as she was trying to move with her front legs I punched her through the heart. Great blood fountain spewed out and she died. Just be quick and decisive with that second arrow.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

Let's be careful mixing in talk about carrying a sidearm during archery season. While that's true, it doesn't mean you can use that sidearm to finish off a deer that's been spine shot with an arrow (which was OP's question).

That's what I thought, I didn't explain very well in my first post that the side arm was intended for that.

Put another arrow through the vitals.

You don't want to stress the deer out any more than you already have. Walking up to it alive will and I have seen guys make the deer suffer even more by not knowing how to properly cut the jugular vain in the neck.

People have lost their life with a knife and a live deer. Be careful.
