I'm babysitting a friend's dogs this week, so of course something is going to go wrong. They don't keep up with the nails on their dogs, and one of them got broke all the way up past the quick. The base of the nail is still there, but there's about 1/8th inch of quick sticking out from the break. No bleeding, and she's keeping it clean. Dr Google says to monitor for infection and keep it clean, all the vet is going to do it put an expensive bandage on it that she'll probably chew off anyways. It's not causing her pain, I know because she's about the damned biggest sissy you have ever seen, and she's not favoring it.
Y'all think there's any reason for a vet trip at this point? Just keep an eye on it a few days?

Just keep an eye on it a few days If she damages the quick and it starts to bleed, you can use styptic powder to stop it. I carry a little bottle of it in my field bag and it works pretty good to dip a nail in when they get broke off. but seriously... dirt probably works just as good, just keep it clean.

yep. Been there a few times now. Noting they can do except give antibiotics if it gets infected. Keep it clean and it will grow back. My old vet recommended 1 tsp of knox gelatin in their food once a day to help soften the nails. Works really good but gave my two inside dogs terrible gas. I mean room clearing gas>
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

They're not real active dogs to begin with. I mean, they're lab mixes, but they're labs mixed with something fat and lazy so I don't see her running the skin off the quick. She's keeping it rinsed fairly regular, so I'll just let it be for now.
Thanks for the help.

I think you're looking at the new nail coming in rather than the base of the old nail. It should be all better in a few days.

Nothing to do. I've faced this before. They grow new ones pretty quick.
