I used to enjoy the restaraunt at the Limpia hotel in FD and the Riata in Alpine. Was many years ago when I got my Masters at SRSU.

There's a Mexican place on the way to the actual Fort. They have a great breakfast. The meal we had at the restaurant next to the Limpia Hotel was very good. Tour the rattlesnake place. Keep the guy that runs it downwind of you. Lots of rattlesnake types to see.
We stayed at the Limpia for a few days. If any of you are going to ever spend the night there, the big room on the first floor is very nice. Lots of windows, small kitchen. and the bedroom is also part of a parlor. That's supposedly the favorite room of most visitors, so we called well in advance to book it. I plan to go back there for another visit, and I also want to spend a night at the Gage Hotel in Marathon (it is Marathon, isn't it?).
If the OP has the time, see if you can get a ticket to a StarParty at the Observatory. We did that. It was great. Take a jacket. Cold up there at night.

her reply on Fort Davis: We are really limited on places to eat in Fort Davis - The Bistro (which is part of the Limpia Hotel) has decent food. there is a Mexican place that is open at lunch that is awesome - Poco's. Stone Village has good soup and salad at lunch. and the Fort Davis drugstore has basic food that is decent but not great. Most of the good places to eat are in Alpine and Marfa.
I told her you were also going to Alpine and hopefully she will text back with some recommendations there.

her comments on Alpine: Reata is one of my favorite places in Alpine. The Holland Hotel is good too.

It has been years since I was in Alpine, but Reata had some excellent grub.

Just returned from my trip. Stayed at the Veranda Hotel in Fort Davis. It's a historic B&B that was built in 1883 as the Lempert Hotel. Great place, great people. Skipped the Bistro and the Reata; I'm too cheap to pay $80-100 for two meals. The Alpine Drugstore had a fabulous hamburger steak with gravy and grilled mushrooms and onions, baked potato, fresh vegetables and salad for $10. The Paisano Hotel restaurant in Marfa was nice, but a little pricey. Just for grins, we tried the Cow Dog in Alpine, an old converted Winnebago RV, that sells all kinds of crazy, loaded hot dogs; really good.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
