I am not convinced of the wisdom in developing loads at or near the limits of what the cartridge and firearm together can produce. - You get short brass life, throat erosion issues, the possibility of dangerous conditions coming up on a hot day, and by pushing safety to the last point, there are numerous small mistakes and misadventures that can jump up to bite you.

All of us know how to be careful, but none of us are in charge of Murphy, and he will occasionally have his way despite our best intentions.

So, this is just me, but I get maximum 270 Winchester velocity - by using starting loads in my 270 WSM.

By having the 270 WSM loafing along at 270 Winchester maximum velocities, my brass lasts longer, and Murphy has a little room to play his pranks without anybody getting hurt. A hot day is less likely to result in unsafe pressure, and the throat area of my barrel does not get the blow-torch treatment quite so so badly.

I have owned a 270 Winchester in the past, and thought it did a great job one notch down from the maximum listed loads. When I found myself wishing for more velocity with the same bullet - I bought a magnum.

Again, this is just me, and I am aware that my way of looking at things is not popular. Most shooters want the most that they can get out of what they've got, and this is an understandable impulse. There certainly isn't anything wrong with that approach, which is popular for good reason - but it is not for me.

Kind regards, charlesb

For the majority of my life I have hunted with shot opportunities less than 150 yards. I don't run max loads for the same reasons you list. The brass lasts a lot longer, I get more reliable bullet performance in my opinion (fewer bullets that grenade) and less blood shot.

When I put my elk hunt together I will be doing my darndest to develop the best shooting max load I can muster. I think you would find if you really looked all you did going from a 270 win to 270 wsm was burn a little more powder and look better on paper.

Just be diligent in knowing what powders to use when downloading a magnum round. You will need to stick to the faster burning powders for minimum loads and NOT use the slow burning powders for the minimum or reduced loads.

With slow-burning powders, reducing the load brings with it the danger of detonation. - Very dangerous.

I stick with listed reduced loads, The Speer book is good about listing them, and an internet search will bring other reduced loads to light, published by powder companies.

I steer away from reduced loads developed by individuals, it just strikes me as a good way to get into trouble. - All kinds of 'experts' out there who dunno squat.

Since the reduced recoil and sub-sonic crazes came along, there have been scads of reduced loads listed around the net. - I just stick with loads from established sources, and that keeps me out of trouble.

A starting load from a reloading manual is going to be safe, for example.

RedChevy:

You have stated what is the commonly accepted wisdom - that to get the same velocity with a given bullet with 270 WSM starting loads as I would with 270 Winchester maximum loads, then I must burn more powder in the WSM.

This is the common wisdom - and it is also wrong. Quoting from the Speer manual's data for the 130 grain bullet:

270 Win IMR 7828 62.0 grn 3066 fps <- Max Load

270 WSM IMR 7828 62.0 grn 3105 fps <- Starting Load

So, with the same bullet and same amount of powder, even the same primer in fact, the 270 WSM actually gives you slightly higher velocity.

Now to compare max loads:

270 Win IMR 7828 62.0 grn 3066 fps <- Max Load

270 WSM IMR 7828 66.0 grn 3250 fps <- Max Load

So, an extra 4 grains of powder returns a 184 fps advantage.

The reason that it works out this way stems from the WSM case being more efficient than the 270 Win case.

I use the starting load for the 270 WSM because it gives me maximum 270 Winchester velocity without all of the wear and tear, and safety issues that come with pushing any load to the max. - All while using the same amount of powder.
