Just curious as to the pros and cons between an all around hunting rifle with a std size barrel (24) vs the shorter barrel (21).
-Acquisition of target would be a pro for the short barrel -minimal loss of velocity would be a con to the short barrel -less weight for the shorter barrel -easier in a blind for the short barrel
What else do I need to consider?

Increased muzzle blast with a shorter barrel.

The shorter barrel is handier in the blind, if you have to walk into your stand through thick woods, the 3 inches of extra seems to catch on everything. The big question is where and how do you hunt.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

I hunt the sam houston natl forest for pigs mostly but I bought a bolt action to possibly bag a deer and also as a pig gun when needed for longer shot scenarios and I am planning on going on a guided hunt this year.
I stalk them mostly so my AR has been my weapon but I needed to expand my horizons with a bolt action as a backup and a deer rifle
Not trying to start a debate just trying to understand my rifle more and what its capabilities are and are not with the shorter barrel.

I'm assuming you would be cutting down an existing 30-06.
I would just use it as an excuse to pick up a short action cartridge rifle, say 7mm-08.

Oh, I have not seen one of those. I think you named the pros and cons pretty well. Your rifle should take care of almost any game animal in the lower 48. Shorter, stiffer barrels also have bigger accuracy nodes.

I say your fine if your sneaking through the woods you don't need the extra barrel length. There is a reason 18 to 20 inch barrels used to be called Brush Carbines.

I like the shorter barrels. 1) lighter 2) stiffer 3) easier to handle The only reason I would go with a longer barrel is if I planned to shoot at extreme distances and therefore wanted to maximize velocity...
