Last night as I was heading back to the ranch, I was going down Lancaster hill on 290 and saw what at first I thought was a coyote pup. I've been on a mission this year to get one alive to train up for the use of finding other coyotes. So at the last minute I pulled up and jumped out of the truck. I guess in all the chaos it ran into my truck because I found this small furry bundle curled up at the edge of the pavement. It was then that I found out it was not a coyote but a grey fox pup. I could tell it was hurt so I wrapped it in a towel and put it in the passenger seat, pretty sure it wouldn't make it through the night, but I was going to give it a chance at least. For the first part of the ride it just laid there pretty lethargic wrapped in its towel. But as I approached the 2400 turn off south of Sheffield, that little sucker came alive. Have you ever had a tornado closed up in the cab of a truck with you? I now can say I have. This little guy went to running everywhere. I safely pulled into the bar ditch and recaptured him, then wrapped him back up and he rode calmly in my lap the remaining 30 miles to the house.

This was him last night when we got home...

This is him this morning...

Looks like he is blind in one eye and may be the cause of his odd behavior last night. Trying to get him to eat this morning. Even though I kill predators for a good part of my living, my heart won't let one suffer cruelty.

Keep you updated on his progress.

PS: I am authorized to keep this animal and I have had the rabies vaccine.

My wife saw the pic and asked if he was blind in one eye.

Cool find, good luck with him.

Little guy seems to be settling in pretty good. Got him treated for fleas and he's eating well, not very active though. This seems to be his favorite activity so far.

Which suits me just fine after working 27 out of 30 days last month...two of those three days the wife put me to work.

Had a couple Greys when I was younger, they sure have character. Mine loved to dig, when I would leave, 9/10 when I got home, they would have dug a tunnel and get in and get the run line chain tangled so that was a 30 minute job usually. Loved box's for hiding in as well, den instinct.

Guess I need to be careful what I post now, he's sitting here watching the THF with me.

Wonder what he'd think about the hog and predator forum?

I guess it's time to name him, but I'm stumped on name options.

What suggestions does the THF have for me?

In that case, so far it's a toss up between sleepy and lazy.

unless you have a secret about taming coyote pups, doesn't work, at some point at maturity, they run off, tried it a couple of times.

hold on Newt, we got a runaway

Have you ever seen The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada with Tommy Lee Jones? The coyote in the opening scene belongs to the guy who is teaching me how to train them. Besides, they will have gps collars anytime they leave the pens.

It's just an idea that had and am going to give it a shot. I think the pups are to big by now this time of year to have a real good shot at it anyway.

Awesome! Update this post as often as possible. Love seeing wild animals raised by people. Raised a Squirrel one time from dang near the day it was born to adult hood. She even went to the deer lease with me. Nothing like having a exotic pet.

You should name it Swiper. My niece use to always watch Dora The Explorer when she was little and they had a fox on there name Swiper that was always getting into trouble. He was my favorite character.grin
