I am new to the Houston area just got out of the army and going to school here in Houston. Any body have any tips or can some one lead me into the right direction of finding a good hunting spot for hog and deer. Maybe an hour or two outside of Houston besides the Sam Houston forest. Any info is greatly appreciated thanks guys/gals

Within an hour or two, you're really going to have to work at finding someone with land. Bunch of deer in Brazoria, Austin, Matagorda, and Colorado Counties, but not many (any) public options.
Somerville WMA is a good option in Burleson County, but I believe it's a drawn hunt.

Funny that you posted this just the other day - I am looking for the exact same thing and was just about to ask the same question. I just relocated from British Columbia, where the vast majority of our hunting land is public. It doesn't seem like there is much around Houston besides the Sam Houston. I am willing to give it a try up there, but I'm told that the place is pretty much a battlefield during the fall. The thought of leasing someone's land for thousands of dollars a year seems crazy to me, but I guess that it is all a little different down here.

Simple difference. Most land here is private and expensive. Costs a lot of money to maintain it and pay taxes on it as well. If you owned land here what would seem crazy is the thought of someone hunting or using your land for free.

Lots of places for lease in Hardin and Liberty County on timber land for fairly cheap. These places are hunted fairly heavy opening week and Thanksgiving and Christmas. Other than that most aren't hunted. Quality of deer is not awesome but can be good if you put in some time. Hogs are plentiful.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Thanks, all! I'll take a look at some of these options. Sounds like my best bet will just be to put some money towards a lease or get to know some people with land!
That being said - if anyone is looking to get out with someone to go with, let me know! It would be great to get to know the "lay of the land" with someone who is more familiar with the area.

Jake1798 I found a place outside of Houston called Briscoe exotic ranch its in Alvin TX not far from Houston. Pretty cheap if u just want to hunt for the meat. That place used to be a very small ranch, like 100 acres or so. Check into it and get references before you hunt there. I knew a girl that worked there many years ago, and she could hand feed every animal there, but that has been 10+ years ago.

Castillo, I will take you on a hog hunt for free if you are interested. Please PM me and let's talk about when you are available. Thanks for your service.
