I have land 12 miles NW of Hondo in Medina county and would like to know how close the Axis deer population is. If you hunt or own land in Medina county and can say that you have axis deer, please state the general location. So far I have never seen a single Axis there, trail camera or otherwise. But they should be relatively nearby.

Thank you

There are a lot of Axis in the CR 211 area. I used to see them all along that stretch of HWY 462 north and south along the Hondo Creek.

Welcome! If you are near a creek, even a seasonal creek - there will be axis using the creek as a highway. If you put out water and feed (alfalfa), I wouldn't be a bit surprised to have axis show up.

Well there is water available on the land year round in the form of a tank, but the closest creek is over a mile away. There are reports of people seeing them to the north, west, and even southwest of my location, but this area has always been devoid of axis. It seems odd considering I am surrounded by large pieces of land with water sources and mostly low hunting pressure. (The immediate surrounding properties have never seen axis either)

A mile is not far for axis. They come and they go - they get an established routes they like to use and repeat them. The trick is getting them to visit the first time, and if they find something good to eat, they will become regular visitors. They love alfalfa and Chaffhaye (sweet feed - molasses laced alfalfa) and the aroma will bring them long distances. They are also particularly fond of overripe mangos (the smell also brings them in - but will also draw pigs). Keep putting out alfalfa and they will find it. Keep it up, and you will have them regular visitors. Now when I say "regular", it might be only every few days as they make their rounds.

Thanks for the advice.

I still would like to get some reports from nearby hunters/landowners so I can gauge proximity. So if you're in Medina county and have Axis . . .
