Worked last year on a doe, she dropped in place from about 90 yards. Should I expect same rsults on buck? Using the federal 130 grain soft points. A friend mentioned to bump it up to 150 grain for buck, but rifle is zeroed perfectly on the 130. Would it make that much of a difference? Thanks

Thanks what caliber/cartridge? if a 270, 130 will be more than adequate for tx WT. Go with what your gun shoots good.

I use 130gr bullet in my 270 and have never thought I needed anything bigger for TX whitetail.

130 is plenty. People have been killing deer with 100 grain 243 and 55 grain .223 for years. Put the bullet where it needs to go and don't worry about it.

Let me put it this way...my Remington .270 with 130gr Remington Corelokts has taken at least 10 whitetail bucks, numerous doe, numerous hogs (up to almost 300lbs) a red stag, scimitar horned oryx bull, sika stag, axis buck, blackbuck buck, spotted fallow buck, black hawaiaan ram, and Texas Dall Ram. Most of those animals (including the red stag and Oryx bull) dropped where they stood. Two or three bucks ran 40-50 yards. If I ever get a chance to go elk hunting, I'll still carry the 130's because it is what I and my rifle like.

redchevy is right on. It is enough, IF you make a good shot. My lease hunters have cleanly taken deer and hogs with .17 Rem, 222, 223, and a 20/223. Bullet placement!

It's not enough. You need to buy a 300 Win Mag and use a TTSX. (Sarcasm)

I started using the .270 Win. about 5 years ago and now I have a few rifles in the caliber. For me, it works better than it should on big hogs with the 130 grain Cor-Lokts. All my .270's shoot this load very well, and it's inexpensive and very available. I like it.

If you want to put this debate to rest , go find Realkiller and ask him. He knows all about killing deer even if he has to run them down. (maybe a little sarcasm)

I would like a tough bullet in that weight and caliber. 270 cal + 130 gr + weak bullet = meat destruction (but still a dead deer). Those 130's can move fast. A nice partition or tsx if you like them should do really well. A 130 gr .270 is not a great choice for an AMAX like bullet, but I'm sure it will kill them dead. Hope I didn't start a carp storm...

No. I think you need 200 grain bullets from a 300 RUM at seventy yards to take down a buck deer.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

My son has switched to 130gr in his .308. Has taken 3 deer (11 point, lg doe, and button buck) in the last two years. The only one that ran more than DRT was the 11 Point. It went about 35 yards before piling up.

You say your rifle is on, then trust yourself and your equipment "shootem in the ear". I have shot quite a few deer with a .243 lots of deer and hogs with a 25-06. I have been told how you gotta have this load and this bullet and so on, remember the kiss theory. I have a bother-in-law who once told me that rifle hunting was no longer a challenge for him, well when you get to the point you feel comfortable taking ear shots (<1.0" group) at 100 yds + you can stop worrying about the caliber, bullet wt., in fact you may find yourself stepping down in caliber. After all it aint the size or caliber of your equipment, it's the placement & accuracy that puts meat on the table.

I have used a .270 with 130 Remington Corelokt since 1980 on 100's and 100's of WT, MD, Red Stag, Aoudad, Scimitar Horned Oryx, Axis, hogs, Coyotes, Bobcats.....highpoint of the shoulder shot is my choice of placement. Correct bullet placement is critical for any caliber and bullet weight. My rifles have always shot the Corelokts very well.

130 grain is plenty. Truth of the matter, even a 55 grain bullet out of a .223 will kill a buck DRT with proper shot placement.
If you place your shot in the heart/lung area, you will kill the deer.

I shot a 270 with 130 gr bullets for decades, taking a couple hundred deer in that time. That is all the bullet you will ever need for deer. I shot every deer, except one, behind the shoulder, in the lungs. The exception was shot between the eyes because that was all of the deer I could see. I am not a fan of head shots and neck shots. Very little margin for error in doing that. Errors lead to suffering of the deer.

The 270/130gr is probably the most popular combo for deer inTexas, if not the entire U.S.

More than enough. Killed many animals much hardier than a texas buck with a 22-6ai and a 70-80 gr pill.
