I really hate to do what I am about to do, because it will be very painful for you.

no - we are pretty sure that my son (almost 2 years old) was looking for ice cream because someone left the door open about 3" and I remember him mulling around over there when I was working in the garage. never occurred to me lock the door with the built-in lock and key.

dang! A while back, we came home from a weekend trip to find our GFCI had tripped due to lightening storm, most meat was thawed but still cool to the touch with some still partially frozen. We started cooking immediately as we were not going to re-freeze. Once cooked, we vacuumed sealed venison burger into 2-3 lb bags (about 35-40 bags), 1-2 lb venison breakfast sausage patties (about 40 bags). A few roasts into crockpots, cooked, let cool and then vacuumed sealed. Ended up saving the majority.
that's sad to loose that much stuff!

Ouch! I can only imagine how you feel. I have about 60lbs of deer meat in freezer in garage. My biggest fear is the GFCI trip or door left open. If you find yourself in SA let me know, I'll give you some of my deer meat.

I feel your pain.. had the same thing happen several years ago (but my kids were about 6 and 10 at the time). I learned to use the lock then too. Also got into the habit of just pushing the door when I walk by. ... you probably already did, but make sure a spray out the drip pan under the freezer (if it has one)... that sucker will get rancid quick.

My heart goes out to you. Be glad it wasn't fish.

dang! A while back, we came home from a weekend trip to find our GFCI had tripped due to lightening storm, A refrigerator or freezer shouldn't be plugged into a GFCI outlet. Even though in new construction, which requires garage outlets to be GFCI protected, you can have a dedicated non-GFCI outlet for a frig/freezer. At least the last inspection I had allowed it. Some will make you put it up high. If I lived where an inspector didn't allow it I would change it myself once the final inspection was completed.

I'm anal about checking the door. I've left it ajar once. Once. Sorry for your loss.

Know your pain and frustration. Had a grandson leave freezer door cracked. Won't say what kind of list he is on now but I should have locked the door.

Ouch; two words: freezer alarm - get one if not already built-in. $12 on amazon.com
